First, blow out your hair with a round brush. Then once it's all dry, pin up big sections. Take small sections about 1 inch and straighten. Start from the inside working out. That means, pin up the hair on top, and straighten the inside. Let down another inch from the pinned up hair and straighten. Do this to the entire head. It is time consuming, but it will last you for at least a week, if you don't put your hair up in a ponytail. If you do, then quickly run the straightening iron over it and it should go back poker straight. Hope that helps.

My best answer, get a really good straightener. If your hair is wavy and hard to straiten get a hotter/better strainer. My hair is naturally wavy/frizzy and getting a decent strainer is the best thing I've ever done. Even if it costs a lot you will get good use out of it.
Also make sure you prepare your hair. Use an anti-frizz/smoothing product before and when straitening take it a little section at a time.

Use a really good silicone, like Simply Stylin' Silk, before using a flat-iron. The silicone protects the hair shaft competely from the heat and enables superior straightening. It also prevents frizz and adds an incredible shine.

I have the same problem. My straightener just takes out the big waves and leaves lots of little, damaged looking waves and the end result is far worse than what I started with.

Blow dry your hair first completely and then get rid of the poof by running the straightener over it. I do this on a daily basis.

blow drying hair works very well. I would also recommend investing in a CHI straightener. Although they tend to be pricy, they are worth the investment. They do not damage your hair and leave it silky, shiny and touchable.

I used an ethnic chemical relaxer for fine hair and it worked very well. It was a non-lye relaxer. You just have to be careful and read the directions, and not leave on too long.
