If you're speaking of regulating oil companies' prices, then where's that lead to in the end... government controlled businesses? I don't think we need that. Consumers need to limit their usage and thus decrease the demand which in inself would lower prices. Yeah, yeah, I know... too much sacrafice. But we either sacrafice by limited driving or at the gas pumps. Either way is a sacrafice, so why not sacrafice constructively.

I do have an idea how the government could help and that is to lower, suspend, or total stop taxing it. West Virginia just increased their gasoline tax because the quanity of gasoline being purchased lowered, therefore lowering the state's gasoline tax income. Well, with the increased price at the pumps, thanks to this added tax percentage, gasoline sales are still declining. Did they help their income? Probably not. But if they would have lowered the tax, then maybe purchasing would increase and they would still have their income and it would hurt the consumer's pocket a little less.

We live in a capitalistic society where we want less government control over everything and let the free market conditions determine prices of everything we use regularly, including gas. This is actually good. Within the current market constraints, we can still be smart consumers and shop around for the cheapest gas in our neighborhoods. This would ultimately bring prices down in all gas stations as they compete with each other to woo us.

What is bad is when the government intervenes and threatens to punish do-gooders such as that gas station owner in Wisconsin who tried to do a good deed by offering nominal discounts to senior citizens and youth sports organizations.

What do you want them to do? Oil isnt a government controlled commodity. Do you want them to buy the oil, then sell it to consumers for cheaper than they bought it? The gevernment taxes oil to pay for enviromental projects, and also to supplement the governments income. If the government starts buying the oil, then oil companies will increase their prices even more, raising the amount the government spends on oil, increasing their loss when they sell it to us, unless they also raise the price, and increasing our deficit, is that what you want?
Its called the free market for a reason, look up Laissez Faire, and the Wealth of Nations.

By the way, if the could control the cost of my utilities, then they could control the cost of my gasoline. So don't fall for "free market" stuff.

Why should they do anything? They wouldn't get their cut of the profits if they actually did anything to the oil companies.
