If you make a pie and invite a friend over what is the best way to send some home with them? Do you place some on a plate or in a container or do you give them the tin with the pie in it and place some on a plate for yourself?

You usually put a generous amount of pie on a plate for that person and put saran wrap over it.

Any of those things is perfectly polite.

With the last one, it depends on whether you're just reserving a little for yourself and giving her the rest.

If you're just giving her a piece or two, then move the smaller part.

It's not really about etiquette, but about her ability to get the pie home without mishap.

Thus, you'd probably want to either put it in a container, or put something over it, pinning it in so it doesn't slide off the plate.

I guess that's the advantage of handing over the tin, isn't it?

But you're giving someone some pie; any method, you're still doing them a favor. Well, OK, putting it in their hand would be rude.

:-)

Have a pretty box ready for the pie you are giving to her then she gets her gift without you having to worry about the plate or container or tin being returned.
You can either use a pretty small hat box or you can just get some type of box w/ a lid and pre wrap the box to make it festive. Maybe you could go to a place where desserts are sold and ask them if you can have a box to fit the pie.

If they are getting free food then it shouldn't matter. However, I wouldn't put it on a plate or container that you expect to have returned. At this point it's not so much about appearances, but about thoughtfulness.

A good thought, is to buy a few packs of those ziploc containers at the market that you can reuse or simply throw away, that way they still get a sturdy box, but you don't have to worry about getting it back. It makes life so more simple.
