The short sweet answer is "possibly."
You just have to figure our how many calories you are consuming daily, and make sure it is less than the calories you are burning. For example if you eat 2,000 calories of food, and burn 2,500 through exercise, then you will lose 500 calories worth of weight. This is not a lot, but if you continue this for a few months it will add up to an impressive weight loss before you know it.
Of course you can adjust this if you want, say eating 1800 calories a day and burning 2500 calories a day results in 700 calories (weight) lost that day, and so on.
As always be careful and wise with dieting/exercising.

The key to losing weight with exercise is to work off more calories than you consume. Normal diets probably should not include alcohol and cardio exercise works best in the early morning after a full nights rest and before your first meal of the day.

I have lost 20 pounds in 2 months by exercising an hour 5 days a week and by just eliminating desserts, sodas, fried foods and blatantly bad foods. I try to limit my food intake to 1500-1700 calories a day (following the food pyramids for the foods I choose). It requires mild discipline, but it is not as strenuous or depriving like the other diets.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Just eat whenever you feel hungry, don't over do it, but eat at least 7 times a day. Don't eat any junk food. Drink 7 glasses of water a day. Exercise whenever you can. Keep this plan up and it will work.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

Well sort-of........
you can stay the same weight...but I don't think you can lose weight. Heres a tip, look at the contence of what you eat if is has 'high fructose corn syrup' I advise you don't eat/drink it.....also eat whole grain stuff and don't eat much sugar.
Best of luck...
