If using one eco friendly bulb in each household is the equilivent to taking 800,000 cars off of the road. Then why don't they send one lightbulb to every household for free. Companies send tons of crap to our houses for free everyday. Just the other day I received a money clip from Camel Cigs....I DONT EVEN SMOKE!!! These companies have the $ to do something like this to help out the world!! These lightbulbs are costly for the lower income families!!!

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think one of the reasons why a company wouldn't do this is because CFLs contain mercury, which may require special hazmat transports which costs a lot of money.

Shipping to big stores it probably comes out as a wash. But shipping to individual households can get pretty expensive. Especially when factoring in bulk and postage.

A better idea would be to send out coupons or some other type of promotion for a free CFL or two. That would probably end up working better while not costing nearly as much to pull off.

That's a great idea. Instead of asking us out here in Yahoo! land, maybe you should be lobbying some of these major corporations, like GE or Sylvania (who make these types bulbs) for freebies.

I just replaced 30, yes thirty light bulbs in my house with the new CFL's. I am hoping to see a difference within the next few months. They do cost more but when you pay a few hundred bucks a month for electricity, it can't hurt!

But you are right, we get more junk mail from useless companies and free stuff we never asked for yet we are told we need to save the environment! Think of all the trees, the gas, postage, and the ink and energy they would save if they didn't print, and mail us such things!! I just threw some away, myself. I don't smoke either but I get stuff from Doral and Skoal all the time!

Something's gone wrong with the math there. A single car will produce far more emissions than many lightbulbs, don't know the figures but you're talking of 1 car = hundreds of bulbs.

But... if each house changed a few bulbs there would be a huge difference.

Yahoo are giving away free lightbulbs - click the link http://better.yahoo.com/answers/register.php or click on the 'Be A Better Planet' logo. There may be other ways you can get them for free, I know that in the UK (where I am) there are lots of organisations and authoroties that provide free light bulbs, there may be similar schemes where you are.

Yahoo has a green campain going right now on their home page and if you join it you get a free light bulb! Everyone should go join and then they can all try out these light bulbs. They last a lot longer than regular bulbs, so even though they cost more, in the end it evens out.

This is the best question I have read all day.

With all of the profit the oil companies are making these last couple of years and they don't want to invest it in new refineries then maybe they should send every household in America a couple of those fluorescent light bulbs.

Write your Congressman and start a campaign.

That is so true.I know when you live on a fixed income, every cent counts. To look at realistically, the elderly use a lot of lights to see where they are going. So why not give them the lights for free? That may be a project for my church to look into....

Good idea. I have five flourescent lamps in my
home and I'm about to get some more. They
last longer and save on the power bill. Yes,
they cost more but you save in the long run.
Also, they don't create as much heat.

LED (light emitting diode) is the best choice, because it uses less voltage ,than CFL lighting, and would lower the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
