avast antivirus is very good. I have been using it on all my own, friends, and parents computers for about 2 years now with no virus infections in that time period.
you need to register the product, however that is free.

There are 2 programs, one is adaware and the other is AVG free. I have used them both and they are awesome.

kaspersky was really good for me but you have to pay after some time.... i think avg is good as well and free
