You probably do not feed it a healthy meal, or you feed it too much, OR you do not give it any exercise or playtime..or not enough.
Most adult dogs should be fed once a day, in the morning, of a high-quality kibble. I highly suggest Merrick as the perfect dog kibble.
If you want your dog to lose weight, why not feed it a little less, and give it no treats for a while.
Also, pump up the exercise, one or two extra walks a day.
Walk or run the dog a half hour after his meal in the morning, and then at least one more walk in the evening before bed.
Also, you want to rule out any health issues your dog may be facing by visiting your veterinarian for a health check up.
If the dog is experiencing an irregularity, it could also be affecting his weight.
Lastly, if your dog is just getting older, adding extra weight is common, so a complete diet and moderate exercise is required.
Do not blame your dog if he has gotten a bit pudgy, help him out!!!

Definitely try giving more exercise... but when feeding do this instead...
First make sure it's a light food.
And 2nd instead of feeding the dog one big bowl a day split it up into 2-3 bowls a day.
Example:
You give a dof 2 cups of food a day. Split that 2 cups into three different bowls so you can have 3/4 in the morning, 3/4 at lunch, then 2/4 at dinner.....

Overfeeding and not enough exercise, just like everyone is saying. It is so unhealthy. She could have a heart attack, or have heart problems and end up not living very long. By overfeeding your dog, you're killing her. You need to put her on a 'diet'. Ask your vet what to do. Why would you want her fat???????

Dogs can be fat for many reasons. Human scrap and to much wet dog food can do it. Others have medical problems for the weight

you may be over feeding her and giving to much treats most all dog treats are bad. the best treats to give her are fruits and veggies yeah sounds weird but true dogs actually love apples and oranges green beans are good to. and you should be feeding 1 cup twice daily of dog food. if that does not work then it may be her thyroid which means she will need to get put an meds to control it

In most cases it's from over feeding but the only way to be sure is a vet check it could be thyroid or somethng else that a vet would need to do test for.

I think you already answered your question, you like having her fat so you can have a foot warmer, but have you considered what is does to her heart and joints being overweight?
In the UK owner can be charged with animal cruelty for allowing their dogs to become obese

It may be because you feed it table food or are feeding it too big portions. It could also be from lack of excersize. It could also depend on the breed or if something is wrong with it.
