No they are not. There is a difference between killing someone with malice aforethought, versus in battle.

John the Baptist when asked by soldiers what they should do, didn't tell them to drop their arms and quit being soldiers, the conversation went like this: "Even some soldiers were asking him, "And what should we do?" He told them, "Never extort money from anyone by threats or blackmail, and be satisfied with your pay." (Luke 3:14)

Jesus, when speaking with the Roman Centurion, didn't tell him to quit being a soldier, instead the conversation went like this: "For I, too, am a man under authority and have soldiers under me. I say to one 'Go' and he goes, to another 'Come' and he comes, and to my servant 'Do this' and he does it." When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those who were following him, "Truly I tell you, not even in Israel have I found this kind of faith!" (Matthew 8:9-10) He was commended for his faith, and not condemned for being a soldier.

There is no inconsistency with faith and service as a soldier.

I don't know, but I know from my father who was 17 years old in the Korean War---he did what he thought was the right thing, wrong or not in whoever's eyes. He is a realist. He is also 100% disabled---including cancer which he got during the atomic bomb exercises, so if he sinned, I hope God is big enough to know he thought in his own mind he was doing the right thing. He was a kid, after all.

Most of us Christians believe the Bible says it is okay to fight in "just" wars. The tricky part, of course, is how to determine what is "just". I imagine a battle in self-defense would count.

No, the Bible is clear that God uses nations to bring his judgment upon other nations. It is not murder to be a part of a government fighting force.

Romans 13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

The Christian Bible say "Thou Shalt Not Kill." What part of this is not understood?

Martin said that it is not murder if it is part of a government fighting force. Somewhat like Germany in the 40s.

Jesus said this concerning a military man that came to him:

Matthew 8:5-10
5When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6"Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering."
7Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him." 8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." 10When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

It appears that Jesus did not say that this man was sinning by being in the military.

God has been used to bless rape and murder since always. Rape occurs during wartime. The murder that is blessed by chaplains is not more holy because of this ritual and mythology. Jesus said to put the sword back in its place for whoever uses the sword will die by the sword.
