A hybrid is the mix of two different species. A mix of *any* two dog breeds does not make a hybrid, because all dog breeds are the same species. Even a dog and wolf mix is not a hybrid, they're the same species (somewhat of a recent discovery).

Edit: A Liger is a hybrid...a mix between a lion and tiger. A mule is a hybrid...a mix of a horse and donkey. A Boston Terrier and Pug mix (for example) *is not* a hybrid, it's simply a mixed breed. Just like a Clydesdale and a Quarter Horse mix isn't a hybrid or a Siamese and a Persian isn't a hybrid, they're both just a mix of breeds. Here's more info: "In order to be a hybrid, an animal must be the product of two different species: donkey and a horse, offspring is a mule; lion (m) and a tiger (f), offspring is a liger; tiger (m) and lion (f), offspring is a tigon; wolf and domestic dog, offspring is called a wolf hybrid. Remember high school Biology, animal classification: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species? Each animal in the crosses mentioned share the same Family (Equus, Felis, Canis) but are different species. The offspring are hybrids. Domestic dogs are the same species familiaris. When you cross breed domestic dogs (Canis familiaris ), you are within the same species; therefore, not creating a hybrid."

A "hybrid" is not a breed, by definition.

In dogs, a "hybrid" would be a mixed breed, aka a mutt (all dog breeds are the same species).

It can also refer to an animal that is a mix of two species, i.e. a coyote/dog hybrid, or a mule (horse/donkey hybrid).

Hybrids are also common in the plant world.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid has some good information.

If you are refering to dogs, then yes they are 2 breeds crossed, then the puppies are breed to other crosses of the same breeds to try to get some traits to come out. There is a hybrid dog registry called ACHC, or American canine hybrid club. Having a dog registered with them doesnt really mean much other than the dog has been bred back along a couple of generations of the same hybrid and can be traced easily to the original pure breed parents, so the lineage is documented. I personally dont like them but thats me, im a 'snob', i like my pure breeds :-).

A hybrid animal is usually a mix of 2 closely related, but different animals, eg tiger and lion, liger, and there is one of a zebra and something, but i think its only the native horse, couldnt remember or spell the name if my life depended on it. These sorts of hybrids are usually thru human intervention.

Scientifically, a hybrid is any animal or plant that has resulted from the mating of two different _species_. The resulting offspring are sterile (cannot reproduce) but when carefully bred, hybrids combine the best qualities of the two species invoved.

One example of a hybrid is a mule, the result of mating a horsemare with a jackass. Mules are sterile and cannot have babies. Mules are prized because they combine the size and speed of a horse with the strength and hardiness of a donkey.

So, technically speaking, mixing two different breeds of dogs creates a mix-breed animal, not a hybrid, since both parents are dogs. Nevertheless, mixed-breed dogs are said to possess "hybrid vigor," that is, they are generally healthier than purebred animals.

But taxonomy is actually much more complicated than that. Wolves and dogs and coyotes are all classified as different species (canis lupus, wolf; canis domesticus or familiaris, dog; and canis latrans, coyote), but they can breed and produce fertile offspring, as if they were the same species. And while wolf-dog and coyote-dog hybrids do occur, wolves and coyotes don't interbreed.

Keep in mind that "breeds," as well as all domestic animals, are human creations, such that classifications and terminology that work well for wild animals don't alway transfer to domestic animals, and vice-versa.

It's not really a "breed" so to speak. A 'hybrid' is a fancy way of saying mutt.

Most people use hybrid, however, as a description more so towards wild/exotic dogs and domestic dogs (such as a wolf and malamute mix or a coyote and husky mix).

I see many here calling a "hybrid" a mix of species. You people need to understand that animals of different "species" MUST still be within the same family. Domestic dogs, wolves, coyotes, etc are all different species but they are within the same family (same genetic make up). Horses, donkeys, zebras are all different species but are still within the same family. You are creating a whole new "product" by breeding but you are still creating a MUTT that falls in the same species, in the same family. Dogs and cats are two different species, two different genetic makeups and are, therefore, unable to breed.

A hybrid, therefore, would be the product of two genetically similar parents.

Technically, calling a mix of two dog breeds a "hybrid" is just the catchy term used by greedy backyard breeders to sell their designer mutts. A true Hybrid mix is taking two totally different species or things and mixing them together. Case in point, the Toyota Prius...uses electricity (charged up) and gasoline to run the car. (hybrid synergy drive).
A golden retriever and poodle mixed together is a mutt..no more, no less.
Mutt, mix, mixed, designer, call it whatever you want. It is not a breed, not a hybrid.

A hybrid is not a name for a breed, nor is it a mix of more than one breed. It is the name given to a mix of more than one species, for example, wolf cross dog, horse cross donkey. Dog cross dog cannot be a hybrid, no matter what/how many breeds involved.

The term "hybrid" normally applies to flowers and plants , but lately the car companies have copied the term to describe their cars that run on both electricity and gasoline.

Dogs that are mixed breeds are called a "mix" or a mongrel.
Mongrel sounds derogatory so many breeders of mixed dogs simply combine the two breed names to make it sound acceptable, classy, and most importantly- saleable.

If you have run into a puppy seller who termed his dog a hybrid, he is exercising a practice in advertising. Using a high falluting term to hide a flaw by implying class.

Yes its a mix.
Breeders use that term and other terms to make a mix breed sound more fancy then calling them a boxer/lab mix or just a boxer mix and so on.

Boxer hybrid sounds much better.
Or a boxalab.
Papers will show you that you are getting a purebred dog.
