Remember that not only are you getting a free dye job, but your friend is getting a chance to refresh her skills on a client she isn't being paid by--so in a way, you are also doing her a favor. Still, it's nice to show your appreciation. I would bring something upfront to show that you are grateful for what they are doing for you. . . show up with a gift basket full of yummy food they can enjoy (with or without you) after you're all finished. . . go to your local bakery and get a pound of fresh cookies (or some other tasty, fresh baked good). The cost of the item should equal what a 15-20% tip would be if you were paying for the service.

Your friends would probably be offended by an offer of money (at least I would if I offered to do something nice for a friend and they tried to give me money). A nice thank you gift such as a gift certificate for dinner for two a nice restaurant would be good, and you should definitely offer to pay for her supplies. If your friends are not the type to be offended by a tip then I would say 20% of what the cost of the services would have been if you had to pay.

I think you could offer to pay for the color and supplies or get them a gift certificate for maybe $50 to a nice restaurant so that they could go out for dinner. I know a cut & color for me costs almost $200.

if she is a friend and you're paying for the color, a tip may be the wrong way to handle this. why not bring bagels and coffee when you go or take them out for a light lunch.

my roommate was a stylist/color tech, anyways when she did my hair for me i would take her out for dinner, and usually we would go and get our nails done. i would pay. as for her boyfriend cutting your hair you should ask your stylist what he likes to drink and just get him a 6 pack.
