Angler is a term used to describe those that apply the angle of the hook to catch fish. A 'fisherman' may use methods other than hooks to catch his limit, for instance netting, trapping or seining from the water. Lobster, crab and shrimp just to name a few are caught by fisherman.

One who uses a rod and reel to catch any species of fish.
This also implies no intention to sell the fish and can include those who return the fish to the water.

Exert is correct!
"Angler" is a person fishing using a rod, and hook. "Fishing" by itself has a broader definition.
