How much do they know about their religion anyway? Do they know about the four pillars? Do they know about the pilgrimage? Do they even know that jihad -doesn't- mean killing at will and that it is a really tiny part of Islam? Or do they just assume that Islam is a violent religion and then when people ask them if they care about Muslims, they point out 9/11 or say no, I just don't like their religion when they don't know a thing about it?

People around Yahoo Answers say it. I was brought up a Muslim in Pakistan and I was exposed to all religions and so was everyone I knew. I'm an atheist now but I still respect the religion. All muslim countries aren't bad, all the women could work if they wanted but they mostly stayed at home. It's not as extremist.
I'm not saying you have to like it. I'm just asking why you pretend to know about it. It's like you're trying to justify it when you can't.

Yes, I know it is 5 pillars. Thanks, for the eighth time. I hope that isn't what everyone got from my question.

I've actually studied their religion, and it's not that bad. I don't agree at all with some points (Muhammad, the way women are treated, etc.) but a good deal of it coincides with peaceful beliefs (I can't say "all of it" because I'm not that learned.)

And yes, jihad is actually a struggle within oneself to find salvation, or so I've read.

So I don't mind Muslims or their religion.
I just mind the extremists.

You posted your question in the Religion section, so you will most likely get answers from people serious about their religion. Such people naturally prefer their own religion, either because they grew up with it or because they have studied and come to believe in it. So their objections to Islam are likely to be more theological, not so much influenced by the news. They know perfectly well that members of their own religions also have committed evil acts, against what their religion preaches.
It is true that many non-Muslims don't know Islam well, just as many Muslims don't know Christianity or Hinduism well.

I was researching an answer to another question and I came up with the following statistics.

"The number of major gods recognized around the world and recorded in world history are in the hundreds.

The number of religions, current and past, centered on these gods, is in the thousands.

The number of lives lost in the attempts to advance or defend religious beliefs is in the millions.

The number of humans negatively affected by this cultural anomaly is in the billions. "

A religion can alter a persons outlook on life and his perception of the world around him.

As with all religious text it is the translation and interpretation of the text that affects the believer.

Not all Muslin's read and follow the vengeful and violent interpretation some see kind and the enlightened meanings.

well some say it becuase they are not religious. Like I don't mind Muslims as people I just don't like their religion, or anyone else's for that matter. I am not picking their religion out I am just adding it to all the other ones. And yes I do not a lot about the Muslims fate such as the 5 (not 4) pillars and about their pilgramages to the kabah and the story of muhhamed and smashing the idols etc.

Some of us know hun...but it does them little good when they themselves comes on here and state the opposite. What you have given is what I learned in my college religion studies.

But take heart, people say the same thing about the Christians all the time. Perhaps we have even more in common that we know.

I think they know enough. I have studied this religion and I admire a lot of fine friends I have been getting to know. But I do not like their religion either. I believe in free will and I respect their choice as long as they do not break laws of men.

They fail to recognize that the violent muslims are no different than violent Christians, such as the sort at the Westboro Baptist church.

Look, everyone is tired of this quiet and self indulgent fixation of "tolerance"....Every Muslim needs to stand and say they agree with the Western philosophy, I am sorry that this has happened but everyone has their time to show some respect and this time the people at the plate are Muslims....YOUR TURN!

The fact that they don't like their religion means that they don't like their beliefs. For example, many muslims teach their children the way to grow up, and don't give them much of a choice and freedom of viewing a greater perspective of other religions.
