I play the piano and guitar. I'm known amongst my friends for writing funny songs, and I'm thinking about writing a new one. It's about geeks with square glasses and about if Microsoft and Starbucks merged. It starts with a D chord and then a F minor, then a B minor, and then G chord. Is it a pretty good idea for the chord progression?

Instead of Fm, use an F#m, Bm, G, D, A7, A7aug5, and D. Then for the heckuvit, throw in a C, an A7, and go back to D.

The first chord in a song usually establishes the key of the song.
Notice I said usually.
Should your song be established in the key of D, then the following chords will be among those included in the progression:
D Em F#m G A Bm C#dim.
Experiment by arranging any of the above chords in any order you choose.
And of course you can always add a chord extensions to any or all chords. (i.e. 6th, 7th, 9th, 11th....)
There are many chord progressions, try some of these more popular ones.
D-G-A
D-Bm-G-A
D-Bm-Em-A
D-A-Bm-G
