A true christian you will know not by a secret handshake or a mystery signal. A true christian you will not find just preaching from some pulpit at you. A true christian you will know by the way they live their lives.
They will live for the betterment of others. They will live a humble life. They will live a life of service. They will live their lives honestly, openly, truthfully. They will be grateful. They will not be disparaging of others. They will be willing to accept the choices of the individual. They will live by Christ's rule "Love thy neighbor as thy self"
By their actions you will know them.

How you define a 'true' Christian is variable depending on who you ask. Several different brands of Christianity don't believe the other ones are going to heaven.
So - it's between each person and God and it's not for use to concern ourselves with.
If you are worried about the level of their faith, or the specifics of their belief structure, then, that's a highly personal thing and it's really not something that others need to know. It's none of their business.
If you are worried about them screwing you on a used car when they say they are a Christian, then the answer is - you still never know. Anybody can mess up. They might want forgiveness later and feel bad, but that doesn't do alot for the victim of a Christian that did wrong.
Some people will define themselves as a true Christian and might be totally whacked in the head. Others are not Christian and they are nuts too. You can't tell by how sane or normal or abnormal someone seems to be.
The best way is to just not worry about it. Pay attention to how they act, and not what they say. Pay attention to how they treat others. To me, it's very annoying when others run themselves up the flagpole of righteousness but that doesn't mean their belief system isn't devout.
Bottom line is - you just can't tell, but you don't really need to tell because it's between them and God, and not any body else including you or me.

"Hey, man. My boss took the t-shirt you signed for me and wore it around town for a week. Then he washed it and hung it in his living room. Now I don't have any way to show people we are buds."
Seriously, that did happen. I met Tommy C. in L.A.
He had a bit of difficulty admitting that he had spilled something into his guitar amplifier (both times). Even if I had a t-shirt or secret handshake he wouldn't know me from any of another million people. How in the world would I ever prove I obtained my ID legitimately?
No, man. You gotta look at their fruits.

You will know a true Christian by their fruits. Matthew 7:16, 17 " Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. "
Galatians 5:22, 23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
If someone who claims to be a true Christian does not show the fruit of the spirit, then they are not a true Christian.

One of the things stressed in the Bible is that true Christians will show love for each other (not to be confused with sex).
For other indications, read Matthew chapters 3 to 6 and Galations chapter 5. These verses hit the main points.

Here are some indications... they will:
* love one another (see John 13:35)
* do God's will (see Matt. 7:16-21)
* be circumspect in how they speak (see James 1:26)
* be compassionate, help the afflicted (see James 1:27)
* have personal moral integrity (see James 1:27)
* have a brightness in their faces (see Alma 5: 14)

Well they want their Savior to return, so they pray for the world to end. They promote the values they've been taught, and legistlate against people who aren't like them. They believe all religions are fake...except for theirs, it's the Absolute Truth. So a Real Christian is an intolerant, narrow death cultist who worshipped a celibate Hanged God. Oh, they want to spread the Good Word, so global conquest is one of their goals.

It is not for you to know , But ye shall be known by the fruit you bear. God looks at the heart of man it isnt so much as what a person does. Because any one is cable of doing a good deed.
