Why are some people so obsessed with bringing down religions?

Why does it matter to you what they believe in? I understand if they're pressing their faith on you but why do you come on to these forums and try to disprove them when they're not hurting you or anyone, they're just trying to help each other? I'm an atheist and I like listening to the different point of views of other people. If their faith is a comfort to them, who am I to be against it? I sometimes wish I had that blanket of comfort :)

By that I don't mean the bigger picture. The defense I get is that some people do bad stuff or that some people try to force the world. Well what about the boy sitting on yahoo trying to sort out his beliefs and he doesn't want to bomb anything or change your faith. You'll try to convert him to atheism anyway. Aren't you just as bad as those who you speak of?

It's good there are some open minded people like as you said you try to be, but there is a populace of people who make themselves much more apparent and like to start up conflicts for no reason.

I agree that faith is a comfort to many people. Not knowing what happens after we die can be very frightening, so it helps to create our own version of what happens. I think some people go too far with it, though, and start thinking that their version of what happens is the ONLY way and everyone else who doesn't believe that is wrong. And that's just stupid, because no one really knows what happens, right? As you said, as long as no one is hurting anyone...it shouldn't matter. But some people just hate people who are different from them, I guess, and wish everyone could be like them. But where would the fun in that be? If nobody's perfect, and we were all like each other, we'd all have the same mistakes. But I digress. I think people get so caught up in their belief being the only true belief that they get obsessed with it and therefore obsessed with proving its the only right thing. But in turn tons of atheist's get obsessed with proving all religion is wrong, which I think is also stupid.

Edit: it's not about converting people or not. There is nothing wrong with trying to convince someone of a rational belief. But religious beliefs are not rational. If you read the Bible or Koran, you will find many more reasons to be a radical than a moderate. Both books justify all kinds of violence and hatred.

Moderates give radicals a justification for their beliefs. When people start believing that one of their ancient texts is a magic book, the radicals are just the people who REALLY believe in what the book says - kill those who are not of that faith (or at least, don't teach science and instead teach ancient creation myths.)

There is a lot of ignorance and many misconceptions about all religions in this world, and little tolerance for what is different or unknown. So many people attack certain religions out of fear or unjust hatred. I may not understand all religions and I certainly do not believe all of them, but I will never tell people how or what to believe in.
