I am a 35- yr old IT professional with an undergrad in civil engg. I do not see any career growth in my job. Should I follow my instinct and go back to school for an MS in environmental engg to change careers?

I would. My CIS degree has been worthless for the most part. Adding some MS certs would help. It also depends on where you live. In a smaller town its pointless.

Id go back and get my masters in enginerring. It seems like having a degree in CIS/IT technologies will only get you a job as an Executive Administrative assistant or anything clerical. An enginerring degree can take you so far, especially a masters.

These days an advanced degree has a lot more weight in getting the job and promotions thereafter. In real life, MS will be more desirable; go for it.

Environmental engineering is hot now, and IT has cooled off somewhat, so isn't a bad idea.

Before you do... try reading some of these books... They are REALLY an eye opener.
