Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
They get along with cats are fantastic with kids! My cav knows the cats are boss and keeps distance between them but would love to play with them.
They don't need a lot of exercise...a small walk or a ball game in the backyard.
They are very gentle dogs and very affectionate.
But they need to be inside dogs and need some grooming (not a lot), If you are not home during the day (ie work full time) they are no good unless you have 2 of them.
They do suffer hereditary problems as most pure breeds do so check out all the info you can on the net and from phoning breeders.
Good Luck!

First try the shelter because puppies can be a handful especially if you have kids. Small dogs can be rather irratated with kids pulling on them or chasing them. So if your kids are educated about how to treat a dog then a small dog like a maltese, bichon, havense, coton de tuler, shih tzu would work. I'd stay away from terriers because they can be territoral and nervous of kids. I've got 2 rat terriers that are frightend by kids because of their movements & the way they come running up. Both go into defense mode. But kids that are calmn and know how to treat a dog, they do fine. Please don't listen to the other people on here that tell you to get "designer" dogs, AKA Snoodles, Pekachu's, Yorkie-Poos, Puggles... they are creating a greater reason for homeless dogs and they are a rip off.

I have a Yorkshire terrier and that seems like a perfect match to what you are looking for!:)))) They are small and there are 2 different sizes. 1 is teacup, that means they are SMALL and well i think the name teacup says it all!:) 2nd is just a yorkshire terrier, they are still small but teacups are smaller, and both size of yorkies get a little bit bigger, but they stay pretty small even when full grown. I hope you get one, they are a blast and are the best that match your needs!:)) Also they don't shed if there is a allergy problem. One last thing, they are VERY smart and VERY easy to teach tricks! My yorkie, Max learned how to give me his paw in spanish in like 5 min.!

I have a precious Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and she is really good with cats. This breed looks similar to a cocker spaniel but smaller. They come blenam which is red and white, or tri-color which is white, black and brown. They are very sweet dogs but not good for outside all the time.

wel it isnt the type of dog that matters.
1)size- in your situation you should get something small or medium
2)when you pick it up from the animal shelter you should ask if it is good around cats

Shetland Sheepdogs are good. Beagles, Jack Russell Terriers (high energy). There are many good breeds. Go to http://www.akc.org there you can get more info on breeds that might work in your household. Good luck finding just the right pup;^)
