Utopia does not exist!!! History is full of those in bad need of couch time. When they control a country with a military the sane folks around them need their own military.
Idi Amin
Stalin
Hitler
Napoleon
The Taliban
Pol Pot
Uncle Ho
Mao
Vikings
Mongols
It is a long list.
Sadly these brutal folks to not understand the "Hug your enemy" concept. Go to Yellowstone and try to pet a Bison or hug a Griz if you need a real example. They all have one thing in common. Once those around them got fed up with their crap they got their butts kicked, their own people revolted...another long list. As a veteran of the cold war in Germany I can tell you that the 100 or so nuclear artillery rounds stored at Fliegerhorst Kaserne (there were other sites as well) were enough preparation to keep the Soviet Union out of Western Europe, at least a part of the reason.

The glorification part is a guy thing. Helps you keep your mind off the potential/actual danger you are in.

Germany 74-76 Fliegerhorst

ever thought about what a fence is for? to protect your property, think of a standing professional military as a fence. Now what do you think? Our leaders decided after WWI and II that having a standing/trained military is important to the security of our nation. The mess in Korea proved that just having men in uniform does not constitute a trained army.

It's called 'militarism'. The structure of most empires for thousands of years. The militarists of the 20th century are Great Britain, France, Hitler's Germany, the U.S.S.R., and the USA.
In the new century, only the USA is regarded as a militarist threat to world peace.

Militarism.

Full militarism is when a draft is instated, so that the Army always has an excess of reserves.
