since the section of yahoo answers called religion and spirituality implies some kind of belief in a higher power, be it a god or at least a higher self, which is the same as saying that one becomes a god...and atheists claim no god and so no spirituality...what are you all hanging around r and s for? this question does not include those who are seeking or undetermined...but confirmed and determined atheists.

This is such a common question and it's amazing to me that it's even asked. My response to the believers is:

You should be glad that Atheists are on here.

Do you not have compassion in your heart? Do you not believe that their very souls are in danger of forever being burned in hellfire? Well, this is your chance to be a good believer and reach out; or are you only concerned with preaching to the choir?

I believe that you are on here for the best of reasons - you love your faith and believe it will save you and others.

Haven't you ever really wondered why Atheists are on here as well?

They, like you, believe there is probably no more important question in the world than "Is there a God?"

So why would you be upset if they were just trying to test themselves to see if there really is a good reason to believe? You should be glad (unless you are happy with the thought of souls burning in hell, which I believe you are not.)

But Atheists have good intentions as well (even though they may not always show it). Imagine for a moment that they are right and there is no God...

Then religious wars, scaring children with threats of hell, and persecution of homosexuals were all just a shameful waste. Moreover, look at the atrocities caused by the beliefs of groups like the Catholic church that teaches AIDS ridden areas of Africa and the Americas that condom use is a sin. They are (at least partly) responsible for the loss of innocent life. Believers spend more time worshiping their imaginary friend then they do caring about real issues like alleviating poverty, or doing something about the great problems this planet faces.

Ultimately, what matters is who is right (if any of us), and how do we know that.

If you wish to know more about the damage that religion causes, I suggest you read "The End of Faith," and "Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris.

I love this question Tammy.

It shows how weak religious faith is. When I was a Christian I always imagined how I would love to have a chance to argue a point with a real life atheist. But when I finally had the chance I found that my beliefs weren't very defenciable, which made me want to stop arguing instead of finding the truth.

This forum gives you a unique opportunity to find out if your belief system makes sense or not. It seams that you are struggling with this, because your answer to Atheists is to want to ban them. What is next, would you ban Jews because they don't recognise your Savior, or Muslims because they don't believe in your God.

Instead of getting upset, why not research your beliefs and find answers to the questions the naughty Atheists are asking. Maybe you could save a few from eternal damnation. Your response is typical of most religious people. Your God told you to go out and save people, but when push comes to shove, you would rather chat with fellow believers. Ouch.

Because when I scan open questions, many of them are directed toward atheists. They are usually condescending and written by those suffering from the delusions of religion.
I feel compelled to answer.
The fact that you have asked a question directed at atheists furthers my point.
If religious people were so secure in their beliefs, why would they keep asking questions of atheists?

Also, I find it sad that an otherwise intelligent human being would believe that there is an invisible man, that lives in the clouds, grants 'wishes, and performs magic. It's silly.

This question is old and misguided. I am an agnostic, for example. My life has a spiritual aspect in the sense that I seek to know more about the nature of sentience. I neither believe nor disbelieve in a higher power.

If you had not agreed to Yahoos terms of service, you would not have you yahoo!Answers account. Since you agree to them, you are expected to aide by them. They include a provision that ANYONE MAY ASK OR ANSWER QUESTIONS IN ANY CATEGORY.

You do nor need to be religious to participate in R&S and you can ask qeustions in foods even if you are not a kumquat.

And now I get to drink!

This is a forum for everyone, not just for the religious. If you don't like being around those with different beliefs, perhaps you're on the wrong board.

This question has occurred numerous times in this forum. Since the subject is religion, it makes as much sense to talk about reasons for not having it as it does to talk about reasons for it.

You can be spiritual and not believe in God. You can believe in a higher self and not call yourself God, that is just silly. There may be beings infinitely greater than God, and we may be infinitely greater than other beings. The universe is a never ending spectrum. Our minds are our only limit. So don't limit yourself.
