since it's been sitting in your attic i'd recommend getting a knowledgable person, preferably at a guitar shop, to tune it first. he or she can also check the guitar out for warping or let you know if the strings need to be replaced. then he or she can guide you to the best tuning apparatus for you (pitchpipe if you're able to do it by ear or one that actually shows you by lights if you're sharp or flat if your ear isn't that good).

If you have an E or an A tuning fork you can bring one of the E strings to pitch or the A string to pitch when you whack the fork against a hard surface--never your guitar--and put it to your ear. Match the sound you hear as you tune the string.
Then, as another poster explained, tune as follows:
xxxx50
xxx40x
xx50xx
x50xxx
50xxxx
X=do not play
4 and 5= fret position
0= open string

Start with a pitch pipe or tuning fork and tune the appropriate string.
Thickest string (on top) is E
Next is A (should tune the same as E held on 5th fret)
Next is D (should tune the same as A held on 5th fret)
Next is G (should tune the same as D held on 5th fret)
Next is B (should tune the same as G held on 4th fret)
Last is E (should tune the same as B held on 5th fret)

well first i suggest an electric tuner. but if you can't do that find something else that makes music and play a low E. try to match it's pitch to the BIGGEST string. once you have that press the string down on the 5th fret and match the next open string to it. do the same thing until you get to the 5th string. press the 4th string down on the 4th fret and match the 5th string to it. next press the 5th string down at the 5th fret and match the 6th string. if you have any question or need a more complex answer feel free to email me.

go to your local music store and get a $10 tuner that has a built in mic. if youre not too knowledgable about the guitar i doubt you will be able to tune it without a tuner.
