DON'T put toothpaste on it - that's an old wifes tale. The cold sore only lasts for about 10 days max. Just concentrate on staying healthy & upbeat.
Herpes simplex (no it's not that one) is commoner than you think - it makes an appearance and then (thank God) it gets better. It is a recurring virus with no cure, but it only lasts for a very small length of time. (something like 7 - 10 days usually)
Keep the virus to yourself (personal disease control). While the virus is visible (or tingling) don't share anything that touches either your own or other peoples lips. SORRY NO KISSING (RULE #1). You can resume kissing when the virus is no longer visible.
Don't fall for any of the commercial stuff these snake-oil salesmen are peddling - they haven't cracked it yet either, and they just want to make a quick buck from you while you are at your most vulnerable.
Cheer up - it'll be gone soon

Sores?
Zovirax or those patches.
As for what cornflakes said, the virus that causes cold sores and genital herpes are the same. Well there are two types, one is more common with cold sores, one genitally. It is really common though.

Never had them, but Zovirax (dont know the spelling) is supposed to be the best.
As for Saws, just put the tools back in the shed!

Cold sores don't last that long. You may have a secondary bacterial infection, usually this is staphylococcal. See your GP, if he thinks this is the case antibiotics may be the answer.
