okay, I've just started arelationship with my best friend, we love each other dearly. Everything about our relationship is flawless... except our religion status. I am a christian, don't get me wrong, but I don't have a particular religion, I believe in God and his word..... now, me being that, HE is Pentacostal.... I am nothing close to Pentacostal. That's a huge leap! But, he is a good christian guy, goes to church every Sunday, and that's wonderful, but I don't understand those beliefs, I don't worship God like that.... I find it, odd. I mean, It's all well and good they do it, but it's not for me. However, I love him very much, should I go to church with him and just suck it up, it's what he'd want, or should I refuse (that would disappoint him I know)? And when one marries does the wife go with the husbands religion or the other way around? It's harder than it sounds, because this is something that means a lot to him... What should I do?

Rocky Road.... you just need to simmer down ol boy, I never said anythign about it having to be ALL ABOUT ME... geeze, get the stick out ur butt and understand what I'm saying....
I've heard they talk in tongue, and I've never heard of this before, except in the bible, I pray to god in my own voice, I've never been to his church or know how they worship God.... I am afraid I won't be seen as being like them and I'm not doing "it" right. It's more about being accepted and not wanting to disappoint HIM. So just cool down buddy boy... no need to get testy with me....

Spend some time studying his beliefs, I've included a useful link re this:

There is no 'standard protocol' of who changes religions if that happens inside a marriage, this is something that needs to be discussed by the people involved.

I suspect it's always better to be oneself and adhere to one's own standards and beliefs, because it's much simpler in the long run, but many people do take on someone else's religion and find it works for them.

There are two general types of Pentecostals.

There are oneness Pentecostals, who don't believe in the Trinty. T D Jakes is one of those.

In the USA perhaps only 5% of Pentecostals are Oneness Pentecostals. Their favorate Bible verse is Acts 2:38. They are also very legalistic. Long uncut hair for women, no short or slacks for women only dresses and stuff like that.

The rest of the Pentecostals in the USA are more Biblical than the Oneness types. They believe in the Trinity like most other Orthodox Christians do, but they worship more like the first century church did and they believe that the Holy Spirit is more real and the Holy Spirit is allowed to be more active in their lives and their worship services.

This larger group of Pentecostals go by names such as Foursquare, Assembly of God and Church of God based in Cleveland, Tennessee. Also Calvary Chapel and Vineyard. There are lots of non denominational pentecostals around. And I'm sure there are more denominations but the ones I've listed are the largest groups.

The best know TV preacher would be Jack Hayford from these groups I just mentioned. Jack Hayford is Foursquare.

This larger group are also called Evangical Bible believing Christians. Yes you can be Evangelical and Pentecostal.

If you'd like more information contact me.

I'll be glad to call you on the phone and answer any questions you have but first find out exactly what kind of Pentecostal your boyfriend is.

Let me suggest you look at my online profile and look at my history of answering question here, I've answered 20 or more questions per day for the past few weeks. See if you agree with my answers or not. Ask your Pastor the same question. But don't tell him I'm a Pentecostal until after he's seen how I answer questions on Yahoo.

Pastor Art

PS: There are also Pentecostals or Charistmatics in most major denominations. I was raised Lutheran, then became a Christian, then was filled with the Holy Spirit making me a Luthercostal while I was still a teenager. I was probably the first pentecostal Pastor offered a job to teach at Moody Bible Institute.

I would at least give it a try. You must understand though that their values and beliefs may wear a bit thin as you begin to sober up in your love for this guy. Some Pentecostal types have certain dress requirements, some get into speaking in unknown tongues and some believe that handling poisoness snakes without getting bitten means you are a true believer. I suspect, because you sound like an intelligent person, you are going to be looking for a back door in the not too distant future.

We believe a lot in the power of the Holy Spirit the way it was experienced by the eary church (praying/speaking in tongues, prophecy, healing, etc.). We're not all as legalistic as whomever "voice of reason" was involved with, and judging from the fact that the guy is even getting involved with you I don't get the sense he's involved with a very legalistic church. If you're a Christian, I see no reason why this relationship would be impossible.

Let's see the facts as you stated:
He's Pentecostal
You are a Christian but don't understand Pentecostal.
I am a non-denominational Christian also, but the last time I went to a Pentecostal church they sang, prayed, and worshipped God. Seems a good Christian would want to be a part of that.
I really don't understand your problem. Maybe "everything" should revolve around you and not the church. If this is your attitude you don't deserve this man.

my way, or the high way

either you are with them in their cult, or you are against them and are relegated to their idea of hell and other fantasies for those they can't control and scare into submission

25 years of my life wasted as a former pentecostal...it was fun, but often miserable with the legalism and worrying about confessing every last possible sin

To find out if HE REALLY LOVES YOU tell him that you've decided to become one of Jehovah's Witnesses AND THAT you expect him to BECOME ONE ALSO.

If he says no THEN THERE REALLY WASN'T TRUE LOVE TO BEGIN WITH ! ! !

Give it a try and You'll SEE THE WISDOM of what I'm telling you ! ! !
