Actually, when I first read the question, I read it pronouncing it as the guys name. Then I got to the word "diet" and had to go back and start over. :)

Yes it is a german name there is also dietrich but those names are very rare now because they are old fashiond and nobody in there right mind would call a child like thaht anymore.
