There isn't an average weight. Females weigh less than males for the most part as they are smaller, like human females.

I do think that a healthy male cat weighs between 9-13 lbs. and a female 6-9. Maine Coons are the largest cat breed and they will weigh more than most cats.

If you look down on your cat from above and it looks like a football it is surely overweight. You should be able to feel you cat's ribs through his skin when you apply a slight pressure running your hands down both sides. If you have to apply a lot of pressure to feel the ribs the cat is approaching overweight.

When your cat has a vet visit the cat's weight should be taken and a record made of it in the cat's medical chart. Illness are sometimes detected by changes in weight and changes need to be addressed when they occur.

The proper weight for a cat can vary widely, depending on the cat's build. My four normal-weight cats range from 6.5 pounds up to 14 pounds. Some large-breed cats such as Maine Coons can weigh 24 pounds and be normal, though most domestic cats would be obese at that weight.

The best way to judge whether or not your cat is overweight is to compare him to a body condition chart - click here for one:

Ask your vet for an opinion if you're not sure where your cat falls on the chart.

That depends on your cat. Like the average weight of a female person is 160 lbs - doesn't make you underweight if you weigh 150 lbs and are 5' tall, and doesn't make you overweight if you are 165 and 6' tall. You should be able to easily feel your cats ribs and see the tuck in of their abdomen when they stand.

If you are unable to tell, ask your vet.

An adult domestic cat has an average height in the range of 8-10" (20-25cm). Females can weigh anywhere from 6-10 lbs. (2.7 to 4.5 kg), while males weigh anywhere from 10-15 lbs. (4.5 to 6.8 kg). These are average weights for a domestic short hair cats, remember that purebred cats can weigh as little as 6 lbs. and as much as 22lbs. The best gauge of your cat's weight status is to examine their body composition relative to the following weight guide: http://www.kittencare.com/Tools_Weight_Guide.html
