I recently asked this girl if she wanted to go out and go to prom with me. She seemed flattered and told me that she would let me know the next day.
The next day she found me and thanked me but told me no.
Why would she wait a day and seem flattered if she didn't want to? Would you not say no right away? Could it be that she likes me but isn't sure if she wants to go out with me? She is a year younger than I am and we've only really known each other for a couple of months but we get along really well.
I understand that she doesn't want to, I just don't know why she waited a day to tell me.

Assuming that you are both in high school, and the fact that she is younger then you, have you considered that maybe she needed to ask her parents for permission to go with a boy that they may consider to old for her? Or maybe to go on a date period? Some parents can be very protective and may consider her too young and that the two of you know too little of one another.

Sadly, once she realized you had asked her, she more than likely flipped through everybody she knew and saw who else was available. She may have found a better offer, but kept you waiting just in case she didn't.

My guess would be she got a "better offer" . But theres a funny thing about those "better offers", most of the time you regret not going with the really great guy who asked you first.

I think she wanted to see if anyone else would ask her and they probably did. If someone asks you out or whatever, you don't not answer them and say you'll tell them later. That is so lame. She might have been caught off guard and didn't know what to say till she thought about it. I'd forget it and ask someone else. Her loss.

She probably had to consult her friends. Friends are a big part of any girl's life and she probably wanted to get their opinion before giving you a definate answer.

She might like you or liked the fact that you asked her. Or maybe she's a little shy around guys.

Girls wait a day not to seem like a witch or to seem desparate.
