Do they support more than the two channels that we normally hear through our stereo. In other words, can I hook it up, for example, to a 5.1 system and get full support, or will it play only on two channels, or will it be duplicated through each channel?

CD's sometimes have some type of surround sound. I don't think it is 5.1, it probably is only Dolby Pro, which is older, so the sound from the rear is only one channel. On my surround sound system, sometimes even the radio has this type of surround sound. The best is from DVD, you probably already know that.

Hi There are high definition cds available that have the normal 2 channel information with a 5.1 surround carrier These can be played on a SACD/CD player to hear the surround version or the normal 2 channel one.So your older cds will be stereo and the newer ones will be surround which the new player will accept .The new cds have a greater frequency range than the normal cd.

A regular CD has two channels of information. Your system can deal with it in multible ways. It won't be 5.1, but just experiment with your surround settings and use the one that sounds best.

CDs don't normally support surround sound since it has only two channels.
What you can do is play your CDs through your receiver but change the mode from Dolby Digital to Dolby Prologic 1 or 2.
It will change the two channels to either 4.0 or 5.1 depending on which Prologic you have.

Yes, but they are not very common. They are known as SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc). They are typically recorded in DTS. It does sound great, but the CD's typically cost twice as much as a standard CD. And they can only be read by SACD compatible DVD players. While most DVD players can read this format, not all.
