I never see a chain grocery store, like: Giant, Acme, Shop n' Bag, Weis, or whatever...

And do they go every week and fill up, or just go as needed?

If you mean Manhattan a lot of people go to Gristedes, Associated, or Whole Foods which are chain stores. I live in Manhattan but I drive over to Queens for groceries because its cheaper.

In the other NYC boroughs (Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, & Staten Island) there are tons of chain grocery stores such as: C-Town, Key Food, Trade Fair, Pioneer, etc.

We have regular grocery stores, it's a regular city. I guess we just don't have the same big stores that a lot of other cities have. For big stores we have D'Agastino's and Food Emporium and Gristides, all of which are owned by bigger companies, not sure which ones, but are part of big chains that are all over the country, just use different names for NY. Also, we do a lot of shopping in smaller stores where we get good deals. WE have a store called Fairways where you get the best value in fruits and Veggies and fish and meat if you live on the west side, but if you have a car people from all over will come to shop there. Also have a online delivery service, Fresh Direct, where you place your order the day before and it is delivered to your door, within a 2 hour window and the prices are better than at some of the bigger grocery stores. I guess most people are using them now. Also a lot of people use a lot of the small specialty stores around here for specific things. I know I couldn't live without some of them for things like fresh pasta and fresh made soup and certain breads.
I would say that most people do one big shopping a week, but probably do go to the store almost daily to pick up little things they need. Remember, we don't have big kitchens, we can't keep a lot of canned foods, and a lot of people have very small referigerators with small freezers, so it's a NY habit to shop as you need it.

If you prefer Healthy and Organic just go to Whole Foods on Union Square. They have an excellent selection of meats, veggies, organic, kosher, etc a little expensive but totally worth it.
Otherwise there is Trader Joe's close by Whole Foods but I recommend you go there week days and definitely avoid weekends (it gets really crowded) they have good choices as well and very good prices.
Do not shop at delis they tend to be very expensive and many times not that fresh.

Good Luck!

Whole Foods is pretty popular.

I usually go twice a week. When you don't have a car, you have to shop lightly. New Yorkers get good at packing a lot of groceries into a small bag.

New york has many small shops, no room for large grocery centers. Everything there is within walking distance. They will get their vegetables at a vegatable store, meat at a meat store, bread at a bakery etc.

Fairway is a nice supermarket on 74th and Broadway in Manhattan. Also on 127th Streets and 12th Avenue.

Same as every other American city, at the supermarket! We don't have chains, local supermarkets.
