What is the best way to travel scotland?

I'd like to get the most out of my time and money. What should I do once I get there. I'd like to see the countryside as much as possible. Is a tour group the best way to go or should I set off on my own?

rent a car. train travel is very limited, and buses/coaches don't get you off the beaten path where you want to go. tour groups are too limiting.

getting used to friving on the other side of the road is easier than it seems; the trick is to actively remind yourself when you turn at intersections.
