There is a website called spiralfrog.com that offers free music downloads through legalized advertising. It's currently available to Canadian residents only, but soon will be open to the folks of the good 'ol U.S. of A. Don't know if personal information is required.

You can either find and download music offered for free by the copyright holders (usually undiscovered artists), or pay for it. I am unaware of any music service that does not require your address and/or phone number.

I have been using MyKazaaGold for years and have never had a problem. You get to download unlimited music from just about any artist under the sun and you never have to pay any fee's per song. They also don't bundle any spyware or other garbage with their software, so it's really safe. Check it out: http://www.MyKazaaGold.com

Music can be validly downloaded as long as these are for personal use only. What is prohibited is the downloading for commercial sale.
