and I have never ever stated my daughter is a witch
my daughter has just turned 16 and likes to read about things , so I wanted to make sure what she was reading was good material in regards to different religions .... including Wicca !

Hi Pangel.
Some great answers here already, and I don't expect to be able to add much to them. Wicca is not exactly a thing to be "used", it's a system of spirituality and a way of living that reveres the natural world and the open mind, the energy of life and the cycles of the universe. Very big on harmony, balance, and a kind of karma - the wiccan rede says "an it harm none, do what thou will" - as long as you hurt no-one, do what you like. And the rule of threefold return says that in terms of universal energy, whatever you put out - positive or negative - comes back to you three times.
There is a great diversity within wicca - some work together in covens, some work alone, some merely follow the precepts of balance and harmony. Similarly the level of spell-use and ritual differs with each practitioner.
What a lot of people get confused about with spell-work is the expected result. You know I'm big on quantum explanations for things, and this is, I'm afraid, going to be another one.
There are health spells and wealth spells and love spells and guidance spells, and many more besides. But the results aren't meant to be Burning Bush spectacular - no giant, transforming power. As a medium, you know the difference between talking to spirits and seeing the future - same kinda deal - all a spell is meant to do is raise some energy and direct it, via particular words, rituals, and actions, to slightly change the quantum probabilities that something will happen. It's essentially like a prayer, but instead of aiming a request an an all-powerful deity, it usually focuses on a smaller, more localised deity-form that is particularly associated with the area of the spell-request, thereby making the amount of spiritual energy directed to the request more effective. It's like writing to your local council about a pothole in your road, as opposed to writing to Tony Blair about it. Might still get you nowhere, but there's a much better chance if you go direct ;o)
I've attached a Pagan Federation reading list, and could send you a book or two if you want to learn more.

One can never understand Witchcraft fully it is an ever evolving way of being. One does not use the craft but rather lives it. Healing is a common aspect of the craft. However back in the day craft practices were also important in planting, harvesting and sustaining of day to day living. It is a belief system that held pockets of people together and gave them bond. In every part of a every county you find those who fall under the label of witch, but live a completely different way. Witchcraft is formed on the peoples needs and surrounding. This is to say, Witchcraft and not it cousin, Wicca which is loosely based on Witchcraft practices with a smidgen of Cermonial Magick . There are many books on the various crafts that might interest you. I would suggest any books on your local mythology are much better sources for the Craft that resides in your area as opposed to a generic witchcraft book that might be sold at your large booksellers. Good luck.

Okay all you knotheads who are condemning us to your hell (which doesn't, by the way, exist).
You people complain time after time about people bashing your religion. Well looky here, pot calling the kettle black now isn't it?
Wicca and Witchcraft are basically harmless religions whose believers believe that mother earth (nature) gives us all that we need. We believe in a god and a goddess, yes. And you believe in your god. No difference, except we have two, you have one.
Stop trying to shove your bible down our throats. You are not only wasting our time, you are wasting yours as well because many of us came from your "faith" and have turned to a different one because of the many inconsistencies contained therein.
If you want to know what Wicca and Witchcraft is about, google it. There are many websites on the subject that speak of it quite thoroughly.
And yes, there are those who claim to be witches, dark witches, which totally turn their back on our first law. "Harm ye none, do as ye will." And their antics will come back on them three-fold.
Blessed be to my fellow Witches. To the rest, have a nice day.
EDIT: To FITZ Why then, hasn't your god made the world healthy, cured cancer, etc., as you put it? We are a peaceful bunch, more than I can say for you folk (i.e. crusades, inquisition, witch burnings). Yep, nice.

back in the days of abject ignorance, a person using lye or laundry detergent to make washing clothes a breeze would be said to be using satanic powers
science and facts rock
anything that was out of the ignorant believer's understanding or control was demonized and many died a torturous death for stupid reasons and fear mongering, which the US is headed for again soon
look in Kraft or crafting natural things into tinctures like cough syrup or using peppermint tea as a potion to cure tummy aches and look out for your life if in 'bible belt'
the Craeft or a medium's skill (witch's crafting) often defies using prayer, waiting for god to magically answer like a genie but if you take it into own hands and perform own healing or miracle you pose a threat against the powers that be that are keeping so many stupid and ignorant of natural things
also, what is natural is often said to be evil...see also original sin or women deemed evil from the get go by modern evangelicals

What was traditionally called "witchcraft" was simply a body of herbal remedies, charms, and sympathetic magic used throughout daily life---not only healing, but things like marriage, childbirth, planting and harvest, making ale and cheese and so forth.
Pollington's book "Leechcraft" is probably one of the best studies of these folkways available; if you're willing to struggle through a bit of archaic English, look up the "Merseburg Charms" as well.

You might try going to Witchvox as they have a lot of information on the basics and about various traditions of paganism, including the many different varieties of Wicca.
In terms of spells, think of them as "ritualized prayers" and you will get much of the intent.
http://www.witchvox.com
Here's the specific page on Witchvox to articles on the "Basics":
http://www.witchvox.com/_x.html?c=basics
Here's the link to the section on the descriptions of various pagan and Wiccan (not all pagans are Wiccans) traditions:
http://www.witchvox.com/_x.html?c=trads
I hope this helps!

okay.........in general....... Witchcraft is a way of using your own energy and at times drawing on the energies of the earth, air, fire........etc (nature) to bring about good health, protection, healing, among other things. It is NOT evil. Witches are in tuned with the earth and the universe......they are very open minded and are able to tap into the powers around us. You can google Wicca or witchcraft and find classes like Wicca101 or something that will explain in depth more if you would like.

Healing is what witchcraft stemmed from, as that was what was important to the peoples developing it. Though, modern witchcraft can be used for many things, healing, harming, and so forth.
Commonly used spells depend on the practitioner. Many modern witches say to make your own rituals, based off guidlines.

true witchcraft uses nature more than anything. wiccan belief is that you don't use it for evil. herbs and alot of common sense, it is more mind over matter because you have to concentrate on your spells and believe and if you just do it for sport or entertainment, it won't work. you can google or yahoo search wicca and learn alot. the evil, hurt someone spells are not usually recommended nor do they usually work
