Jesus is represented as a baby, a boy ,a teacher, a miracle-worker and as someone of many "phases"'of His life in Catholic and Orthodox art and not just as the Crucified. Jesus is also depicted as Risen,Ascended,Coming in Glory and Reigning in Catholic art.
The crucifix is important because Catholics believe that Jesus died for their sins and that that self-giving of Jesus even in pain and death is the greatest depiction of love."Greater love no man has than to lay down his life for his friends" and Jesus died for for sinners.
The cross was not common in Pre Constantinian Christian art because it was still a grisly mode of execution. The doors of Sta Sabina Church in Rome have a depiction of the Crucifix from about the 5th-6th century. Christ reigning from the cross was popular in the Romanesque Period because it joined the Priestly and Sacrificial Death with the rising and ascending Glory of Christ.
The Franciscans, who emphasized the fact that Jesus had a full and true human nature as well as divine, popularized not only increasingly realistic crucifixes but also Nativity Scenes in the 13 Cent and onwards. The crucifix was not uncommon in Lutheran art because of the their "Cross-centered theology".
I love to pray to Christ while I am meditating on His great love and looking at the Crucifix. I also like different types of crosses that emphasize the Glory and victory of Christ. I wear a crucifix.
Many religions have gods resurrected"like the corn'" but Christianity's Jesus took all our sufferings on Himself and showed the way to resurrection through His embracing even death for our salvation.

the reason that Catholic Christians have the crucifix is because of the teaching of St. Paul to the Corinthian Church in his first letter to them. He said the following:
"But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;" (1 Cor 1:23)
Certainly there is noting wrong in praying before a crucifix since Catholics are present at the foot of the cross at every Mass at the one sacrifice for all.
When Jesus was crucified, Christians adopted the crucifix as a reminder of the reason for preaching the Gospel to all the world. Christians were commissioned to preach to the world the truth of the crucified Christ and to use words if necessary. The crucifix is a fitting symbol of the reason behind the Christian mission to the world.

I don't think that it's bad to pray in front of a crucifix if you are praying to Jesus. The crucifix is just a reminder that Jesus died for us. I have a rosary that I keep in my car. But I don't use it when praying. I pray to God. Some Catholics pray to saints. But I think that's alright as long as they believe in Jesus and that he is the son of God. And that he is most important to pray to not the saints. I'm not sure why it is so popular w. Catholics. Sorry.

the crucifix signifies how Jesus died. I don't believe it's bad to pray before a crucifix as long as it's not the crucifix you worship but Jesus. As far as how it got so popular between Catholics i'm not sure.

The MOST important thing that Jesus did for us was die for our sins to give us the gift of everlasting life.
He did rise from the dead but rising from the dead did not open the gates of heaven for us, dying for our sins did. The crucifix in no way denies the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ is the MOST important point in all of history.
The crucifix reminds us of this moment.
The following Scriptures even suggest that Jesus wants us to lift up his image:
Numbers 21:8-9 states: And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if anyone who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover." Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he recovered.
And in John 3:14-15, Jesus says in correlation: "And just as Moses lifted up the [image of a] serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."
With love in Christ.

Paul said he would preach nothing but Christ and him crucified. The crucifiction is ever before us as the price of sin and our call to die with Christ.
Those that display a barren cross fail to realize that the cross was never raised barren. It was was raised with the body of Christ. Jesus did not come down from or resurrect from the cross. It is not a good symbol of the resurrection. That would be an empty tomb.

In the past, roman empire execute people with crucification. So Jesus was crucified at that time. Yes it's bad to pray before the figurine of Jesus on the cross. Catholic regard it as symbol maybe.
Christians don't pray in front at any figurine what so ever.

The cross is a pagan symbol that predates Christianity by thousands of years.
Apostate Christians adopted the popular pagan symbol of life and gave it the appearance of being Christian by claiming that Christ died on a cross. “In the Egyptian churches,” says The EncyclopÅdia Britannica, “the cross was a pagan symbol of life borrowed by the Christians and interpreted in the pagan manner.” The unchristian cross has no place in Christian worship. To consider it as sacred is to violate the Scriptural command: “Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership do righteousness and lawlessness have? . . . quit touching the unclean thing.”—2 Cor. 6:14, 17.
