tell him now he dont have to waste any money on buying you a car, and it would help you be more responsible. Maybe you can volunteer to do some extra work to "earn" the car.

Transmission repair is $2-3,000. And with 50 acres I think there might be enough room. Why is he keeping those 2 international scouts? Maybe he should get rid of those. Ford Explorers aren't bad vehicles they're just somewhat top heavy, but when properly driven they pose no more of a safety issue on the road than a Corvette.

Talk to him openly and seriously about keeping it for you.
If you have 50 acres, then room is not an issue.

He may be looking at the price tag for a repair bill (2-3K)
If you are in school, then take auto/shop class and do the reair yourself.
You can get the parts rather cheaply at US-Matic in Mobile, AL. and if nothing else, you can rebuild it in a shed at home.
Doing the work yourself will save a LOT of money, plus get you familiar with the workings of the driveline.

I rebuilt my first transmission for 44.00 from a US-Matic master kit. My second tranny was slightly higher, due to the model.
If you choose to follow my suggestions, buy a Ford Automatic Transmission rebuild guide and save yourself a lot of frustration.
Rebulding a tranny is not difficult, but it HAS to be done with patience and concentration.

I think I'd rather have the Scout. Use to have a 77 Scout II. The gas mileage wasn't great, but it would pull. Mine had the 345 V8 and auto with 4X4. Traded it in on a Vette.
Enough of my history, and on to you. Simply explain to your Dad that you would really like to have this car as your first car. Come up with a plan to make it worth his time to keep it. Offer your Dad some kind of reward, like doing something extra to help buy the car. Give a promise of good grades, or other item, you know he will appreciate, like coming home on time and not staying out late. Use your head, you know what will push his buttons and help him see it your way. good luck.

Don't argue. Come up with a plan. You might want to tell him you will make a place to keep it, explain to him how you expect to repair it and how it is going to be paid for. Make a deal with him that if you don't have it running before a deadline you will get rid of it. Parents will listen to kids more if they are responsible. Make sure you are getting good grades and keep other chores done. He may think you will never finish it so you need to show him that you will by finishing other tasks.

id just tell him how much i wanted it,and if he let it stay in the family i would fix it up and take good care of it,and use this, tell him it would be cheaper than buying you a car,and the bronco would be safer also, you,ll have to be real convincing on this one though if he has his mind set on getting rid of it,you,ll really have to do some good talking to him about it,but if your good enough you can maybe talk him out of getting rid of it,good luck on this id say your going to need it.

Ask him to give you the Explorer "As-is" and you take on the responsibility to fix it or learn how to fix it.
