No, it can never be harmful to extend your abilities in this field, but, unless the place of employment is doing work with another country and communication is important, there should be no language requirement except for English in applying for a job in America. Turn up the burners on our melting pot and begin learning the language of the land. Retaining your own can only be advantageous.

English is the richest, most full featured language in our history. Cinema, literature, technical documentation and commerce use English to a fuller degree than any other language. Speaking other languages has great merit, but speaking English better should also be valued.

Wow, you must live in a population with mainly Hispanics....I do also, about 80%, but it is NOT required to speak Spanish in any job I have worked at....I prefer to speak English anyway....My Spanish is poor....I get by with not speaking Spanish MOST of the time....I know I am lazy, and should master both languages....

Learning another language because you would like to is awesome. Being made to learn another language is another thing entirely. It should only be considered a 'plus' when applying for jobs if you can speak another language. So no, in general, I don't think it's fair.

We are one of only a handfull of countries that don't require students to learn a second language. Almost ALL countries require their students to learn English.
Our students are too dumb to learn...they think everybody in the world should speak English only....
I think it should be required that every graduating student be fluent in either Spanish or French.

Well, it's always good to learn 2 languages, but i don't think it should be an obligation.
Actually i read on a magazine the other day, that learning 2 languages can be good for the brain and the memory...

English is this nation primary language. However if one has an unique ability to speak other languages, it make that American individual more valuable to the community and diversed culture structure.
