Why use a 12 over a 6? Is a 12 string guitar used for chords mainly? Do they make 12 string electric guitars? I usually only see it on acoustics.

With the treble and bass combined in perfect octaves for each string the listener gets a full orchestra of chord arpeggios and harp-like action. The 12-string guitar is chorded exactly as a six-string is and is no more difficult to play, even when leading.

To many guitarists it proves to be a novelty to play--to break up the routine of playing the six-string guitar.

Naturally, buying a set of strings for this instrument is about double than that of the standard set of six strings.

They use them rather than 6 string because they have a much more interesting sounding tone, some songs that are played on 12 string would be songs like: Stairway to Heaven, Hotel California, and many more.

they just create a more full sound. each string is doubled (for example, there are 2 low E strings, and 2 low A strings) so it's more melodious. yeah, it is usually for chords and folky melodies. I've seen electric ones but only rarely, because electric guitars depend on amps and that kind of destroys the point of a full sounding acoustic.

you get a much fuller sound out of a 12-string. and yes, you can get an electric 12-string guitar. you can pretty much get any type of guitar custom-made if you want, too (and have the $$ for). hell, even korn's guitarists play custom 7-strings.
