All green plants produce oxygen when they have light available. The process is called photosynthesis. So you're right, no new oxygen is formed at the poles. But it quickly disperses from other parts of the world and finds it's way there and, there's lots of oxygen in the atmosphere for us to breathe. That's why we don't all suffocate at night.

You do not actually have to be near the tree :)
I suspect our backpacks would be bigger then.
You can do a simple experiment to prove it, buy some simple water plants, underneath the water put a test tube over the plant. You will see an oxygen bubble soon!

Um, wow. Oxygen is a gas. It spreads out from where its produced and fills the atmosphere. It is circulated by atmospheric convection.
