You don't. It is natural for them to do this. The dog is proud to have brought you a "gift." He does it for you, believing this will make you happy. Do not punish for this. Be very careful. If the dog brings you back a bat, call your local Animal Control to retrieve the bat for rabies testing. Even though it is dead, it still has the rabies virus. We went through this about a month ago with our puppy. If the bats' brain would have tested positive for rabies, puppy would have needed a rabies booster, plus the humans that touched the bat would have needed shots. Rabies vaccines are NOT 100% effective that are given to dogs.

Two methods that I know of. Both will seem a little cruel but if you think about it neither really is. The first is simply tie the dead animal around the dogs neck position so that the dog cant chew on it. after several days he will be sick of it and wont want to have that smell near him again. My father did this on our farm to keep the dogs from killing chickens - it worked. The second was a technique I learned from a dog training facility in Tampa Florida - when the dog comes in all proud of what he has killed - simply say what a good boy do you like that? while you are muzzling him with the item still in his mouth. He won't be able to open his mouth to spit the item out so after about 2 maybe 3 hours he is so ready to get that out of his mouth that he won't want to ever touch that animal again.

I've never broken a dog before.I've bonded with them and kept their attention focused on me and shown them what pleased me and displeased me and we've gotten along just fine.
Keep a better eye on your dog and he won't have the chance to bring home presents to you.
He brings you these gifts to earn your approval and respect. In his mind he's bringing you a snack.Remember that the next time you run out of dog food and forget to pick up a bag on your way home.

The dog is bringing his master these dead creatures to make his owner happy. A dog is proud of these actions and is pleasing his owner. Just let him be - its normal. bettyk

How about not letting the dog get the chance to do this in the first place? My dog now and dogs I've had previously have never done this. I use to walk dogs as a job and none of them did this. Are you just letting your dog loose all the time like two of our neighbors? If you walk your dog on a leash and take them outside to go to the bathroom then you wouldn't have this problem. If they start to pick something up or smell it then you correct them by yelling their name and telling them no. But if you are paying attention as you walk them or take them outside then you can usually head it off.

let the dog bring you its gifts and if you dont like that get a different dog , why break him of what he loves and he must love you to be bringing his prize to your doorstep.

Keep it inside. Why is your dog outside unsupervised?

There are tons of cases of dogs who kill rats, squirrels, birds, or similar wildlife that have freshly been poisoned. The dog then is poisoned.

Keep your dog fenced or on a leash at ALL times when he is outside.

The dog brings you back it's kill to show you what it has done (for you) A predatory animal will bring back its catch to please its master and show that he is able to "earn his keep".

You don't. But.... if you keep him in your fenced yard, not allowed to roam free even though he likes it, u won't deal with this problem again. If he loves to roam, then "kill two birds with one stone" and walk with him & don't allow the behavior. They'd love to spend more time with u and this is an easy way to show them u love them too!
