The mountain, I believe is a metaphor for obstacles and a good example would be Pope John Paul II's pray for the fall of Communism!

To answer that question go back to that passage and look at the context on scripture in which Jesus was talking about. Earlier, He had cursed a physical fig tree and it dried up and the root. The disciples marveled at it. But Jesus went on to say, if you think this is something, "I tell you that if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could speak to this mountain and it would obey you". So Jesus was even talking about a physical mountain. He was trying to point out that faith has power over the physical things of the world whether it be as small as a fig tree or big as a mountain.

That was a metaphor. Alot of the imagery that Christ used when teaching the people was chosen because of its instructional value. The mountain that Christ spoke of was any seemingly, insurmountable obstacle in a believers way, and the faith as small as a grain of mustard seed was figurative of the amount of faith compared to the size of the obstacle needed to overcome it. It was a metaphorical reaafirmation of what God said in the OT "Is anything too hard for the Lord to accomplish?" The contrast is meant to show the temporal condition of the one in relation to the immediacy and eternity of the other.

Obi-wan gave a great answer, but honestly, in my limited practical thinking and knowledge, I think most of the Bible passages are metaphors, and that it is one of them.
The mountain represents any difficult thing or obstacle we can find in life, and when we believe (have faith) we can overcome it (or in other words, make it "move") we will.

The mustard sead concept was Jesus trying to teach quantum physics to farmers and fisherman. If you become Christ consciousness, anything is possible.
Time and space are not constraints in which we live, they are modes in which we think --Einstein
There is no space, time. It is an illusion. It all happens in the now.
