Jesus has always referred to God as a different and superior person.
"But I want you to know that the head of every man is the Christ; in turn the head of a woman is the man; in turn the head of the Christ is God." -- 1 Corinthians 11:3
"The Father is greater than I." -- John 14:28
"Concerning that day or the hour nobody knows, neither the angels in heaven nor the Son, but the Father." -- Mark 13:32
"No man has seen God at any time." -- John 1:18
"Then Jesus said to him: "Go away, Satan! For it is written, ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service."" -- Matthew 4:10
"He that exercises faith in him is not to be judged. He that does not exercise faith has been judged already, because he has not exercised faith in the name of the only-begotten Son of God. " -- John 3:18
"Jesus spoke these things, and, raising his eyes to heaven, he said: “Father, the hour has come; glorify your son, that your son may glorify you."" -- John 17:1

you just don't understand the Trinity, that's why. this verse speaks about the two persons in the Trinity. God the Father, the True and Living God, and Jesus Christ, who came from the True and Living God. We believe that God's essense, from which all the Divine persons are, contains His mind as well. Jesus leads to the Father.
The Holy Spirit is not mentioned because Jesus was emphasizing to the Jews that He is of the Father, His connection to God. The Spirit is different. The Spirit wasn't 'begotten', but just there. The Holy Spirit is mentioned as a Divine person of God in John 16:7-15. you'll notice the Spirit is refered to as "He" and the Greek word "parakletos" is used to describe the Holy Spirit (parakletos means "of the same essense") -- the word "another" in John 14:16.
also note that the following verse (John 17:4-5) states that Jesus is eternal. angels aren't eternal. man certainly isn't eteranl. only God is. other beings are everlasting.
note John 1:1 and Genesis 1:1-31
note Isaiah 54:5 and its correspondants Matthew 9:14-17, and Mark 2:18-22 (mark was Peter's account written down)
I could go on...

Jesus made an interesting statement in John 4:22, while talking to a Samaritan woman - "You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation originates with the Jews." Jehovah God chose the descendants of Abraham, son of Terah, to be his people here on the earth. They became known in time as the Jews. Jesus was born in the family line of Abraham as the Bible book of Matthew records. Jesus is NOT God's son and God at the same time. That is a teaching that has been developed and adopted into the so called Christian church that began to fall away from God's righteous standards. True Christians have always understood the truth of the Bible that states that Jesus is the Son of God. Inferior to the position to the Almighty God Jehovah. But we in no way downgrade or belittle the position of Jesus. We recognize him as the Christ, the King of God's Kingdom, and the High Priest for all mankind. As for the statement, "Christians say that people who don't follow Christianity will go to hell" - hell fire I presume - those are not true Christians who would make that statement. A study of the Bible shows that yes, there is a right and wrong path in God's eyes. But to properly understand what Jehovah God intends for mankind, whether they be living now, born in the future, or already dead, a person must take the time to examine the Bible in more depth. So there is no contradiction with Jesus being a Jew and a person being a Christian, which means being a disciple or follower of Christ. Jesus came to make some changes, and surely he did. He opened up the way to everlasting life, something not available to Jews under the Law Covenant. But even they will benefit by being brought back to life by means of a resurrection and being given a full opportunity to learn about Jesus and the life offered through him. - Acts 24:15

The doctrine of the Trinity is encapsulated in Matthew 28:19, where Jesus instructs the apostles: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
The parallelism of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit is not unique to Matthew’s Gospel, but appears elsewhere in the New Testament (e.g., 2 Cor. 13:14, Heb. 9:14), as well as in the writings of the earliest Christians, who clearly understood them in the sense that we do today—that the Father, the Son, and the Spirit are three divine persons who are one divine being (God).

That statement came from John before Christ was
crucified and then rose from the dead, when Jesus
returned he told the Apostles that his Father would send
him his Holy Spirit.
So the Apostles were unaware of the Holy Spirit until
Jesus returned to Heaven.

Read John 8:42, "Jesus told them, "If God were your father, you would love me, because I came forth out of God" (KJV). Jesus told the Jews in this passage that He came out of God. Jesus Christ is the Word of God. God's word is equal to Himself according to John chapter 1. Jesus Christ is that aspect of God which is an "extension" of God regarding the salvation of men. As for the Holy Spirit. Go back to Genesis 1, when God said let their be light. The bible says that God's spirit hovered over the face of the waters. This spirit was in reference to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is that aspect of God which is responsible for bringing things into existence and leading and teaching those who come to Christ. The Holy Spirit and Christ are extensions of God Himself yet having power and authority equal to God, only being subject to an authority figure which is God the Father.

God is God. Jesus is God in man's body. The Holy Ghost (mentioned in Acts 2:28) is God in spirit form. They are all one.

You have to ignore the simple english statement made by Jesus.
Just as they ignore Rev 1:5,6 where John tells us that anointed christians will be priest to the God of Jesus.
Just as they ignore Rev 3:12 where Jesus tell us that anointed christians will glorified in the name of his God.
Just as they ignore Heb 1:9 where Paul tells us the Jesus' God anointed him above his partners.

"Absence of proof is not proof of absence." Nevertheless, proof of the Holy Spirit is not completely absent from this verse, since "the only true God" refers to the spirit of God, while "Jesus Christ" refers to the flesh of God.
