When Jesus says, "The things I do, You can do greater".
He didn't say "When you die and go to heaven then you can do greater"
Could it be that Jesus was trying to teach the people that they could all be like him. Please don't answer with what your pastor says it means. Use your own brain. Thanks.

Christ was a template or pattern. Much as one would make many copies off one original. He came to show the attributes a human must develop to leave this realm and reach the next higher level of awareness. This is what the term ascension means. This is what he meant in that quote. The second coming is not in the sky but in the hearts of all of humanity who can put on the Christed pattern. This is open to all people who can open their heart chakra at least 51% in universal love for the whole of creation. This is the meaning of loving neighbor the same as loving self. Basically that is 50/50 love which is half for self and half for others. This is the balance that allows one to break free of the reincarnation cycle of learning and is like a graduation since this is what we came here to learn. Christ when saying "the things I do" was discussing his present incarnation on earth in the first century. He was discussing that everything he did and was, others could also be and do, and even things of a greater nature.
I would say you are correct in your estimation that Christ was trying to teach that people could be like him.

Blessings, Suiszen

Personally, it means that He only had a limited time to do things. His ministry was only 3 years. He gave all believers the same power and authority He has because He knew we would be around longer and could reach more people. Look at Paul for instance. He traveled over a greater distance and reached and taught more people than Jesus did. Why? You just read why.
Look through history at some of the revivals that have taken place all over the world. People getting healed, delivered, set free from bondage, getting saved, filled with the Holy Spirit. These are the things Jesus did and greater.
Hope this helps.

No, Jesus is saying the exact same things He did in this earth the believer in Christ can do also. This is what Jesus is talking about, not in heaven, but here in this earth. One of the reasons Jesus came to earth is to show how Him just being in a regular fleshly body like everyone else could do the miraculous through the Holy Spirit. Remember, He sent the disciples out two by two and they came back with reports of doing the miraculous. Also, in the books of Acts, Peter and Paul also performed miracles. I have had God perform alot of similar miracles through me except for raising the dead, this is how I know what this passage means, because I have been doing it through the power of God. But this statement is for "every believer" and not just pastors. Read Mark 16:15-18.

My brain says Jesus meant exactly what He said and He knew what He was talking about!
Men and women who do as Jesus did by saying only what "the Father" says and doing only what we see "the Father" doing; or by proxy, what we hear Jesus say and see Jesus do; then we can do what He did and greater than these!
I believe it and I also believe it WILL all be manifest before He returns. Men grow progressively in the Kingdom. Probably the children will begin to manifest His miracles and greater before us older folks will.., but every word He spoke MUST come to pass, and don't you doubt it for a moment.
Being 'LIKE Him" is the goal. He is our elder brother. EVERY good work and EVERY miracle that Jesus of Nazareth ever did on this Earth was not 'AS" the Son of God, but rather AS a man filled with the Holy Ghost. He came upon Him after His baptism by John in the river Jordan, and His Heavenly Father said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
We are pleasing to our Heavenly Father by doing as Jesus did..., not our own agenda or works, but waiting for His instructions and doing the 'will of the Father'. Let us ALL imitate our Lord and truly BE His hands and His feet and His heart of compassion to our fellowmen and women. Then we will see the same and even greater works.

Well i just posted a similar question so I'm in the same boat but I know that God's people are going to get a special anointing those that seek him for his purpose in life and want to see him Glorified for these things to happen so yes I believe it is going to happen.some people don't bother to seek him Spiritually so they don't the Spirit and the power of it we don't really know how strong God's power is if Jesus just by speaking can raise the dead how much could we have?

John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

If we look up "greater" in Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible it translates to "more".

Jesus was telling us "more" works shall we do because he was about to leave this Earth and he would not be here to do any more.

What have pastors got to do with it? I have been running in Christian circles since I can remember, and I never met anyone who simply repeated what the pastor said. More often then not they were critical of the pastor's views.

yes and I think that in Him saying you can do greater means that He was perfect and it's not hard to do things great when you're perfect, but if you are imperfect and you can do things like He did (ie love, help, others etc) then it is considered a greater act, due to the probability of failure because of our imperfection.....wow, I need an advil after this one....

The things I do(Jesus "collected" 12 deciples, etc.), You can do greater". (if each of the 12 deciples reached 12 people). One of the deciples invented the pyramid scheme, and another started Amway.

One of the reasons so many persons are 'against' christianity is because of the ignorance surrounding many believers in Christ. We are called christians because we follow Christ.

That means, as He is, so we are in this earth.

Without Him we can do none of these greater works, but through Him working in us through the Holy Spirit, we can do ALL THINGS through Christ which strengthens us.
