It's an open-ended prophecy useful for social control.

Eric,
I agree that Revelations is a warning--I also believe that if we continue on the present path, that things will definitely "get worse." I agree with your statement "change your ways or you will face this destruction."
I take my thoughts from a book I read cited below.
I too believe that WE are the ones bringing on "the wrath of God," which means nothing more or less than the non-intervention more advanced and intelligent Beings (who could help, but choose not to). This allows the actions of free-willed beings (AKA--us), who are learning by our own experience about the hell we are creating for ourselves.
This planet does not exist by the laws of nature just to maintain the individuality of only one, but of ALL life thereon. The natural resources of the earth cannot be controlled by one individual’s assertion of self without regard to everyone else’s natural prerogative to claim the same right.
Any religion or god that does not support the law of allowing the free will of another, and does not teach its followers to do the same, does not support the essence or reality of existence.
The book claims, "Now that the “disclosure” [the Apocalypse of John the Beloved] has been unfolded, and presented throughout the pages of this book, the whole world will be held accountable for compliance or rejection of its truths."
If you want to understand EVERY VERSE of Revelation in easy-to-undertand language, you can read the book for free from the site below. It has opened my eyes.

Wrong. Revelation is a prophecy. It will take place whether you want it to or not. The message is quite clear...
Re 22:6
“These words are faithful and true.” And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent His angel to show His servants the things which must shortly take place.
The 69 weeks of Daniel were fulfilled to the letter. The 70th week will be fulfilled to the letter as well, and that is what Revelation is all about.

The only thing you have the power to change by your own free will is whether or not your name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

What Revelation tells us had begun in the Babylonian Empire and will continue through the coming of the Lord. It is a warning, but this time we can't get out of it. It must come to pass. The Lord will bring his people through it. Jesus will NOT return until these things have taken place.
Acts 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God had spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

Much of what the Book of Revelation has foretold has not yet come to pass. Every single thing that was written in that Book, will one day happen. It is absolutely literal.
