The American Sycamore, Platanus occidentalis, is an Angiosperm. That is to say they have ovules entirely enclosed within a modified leaf structure, the sporophyll -- or literally spore bearing leaf. Gymnosperms are a group of plants with ovules on an open sporophyll, which are typically arranged in a cone.

The fruit is a spherical cluster of single seeded, non-fleshy achenes borne on a short stalk. Each seed is adapted to wind dispersed with the use of "wings."
