It's generally one of three things:
Worms
Anal Glands
Itchy Butt
Rubbing the butt on the carpet can help expel the anal glands, but you may want to touch baase with the vet if this behaviour continues. Ruptured anal glands are a serious problem.
Keep an eye out for pieces of rice in her stool - these are worms.
Itchy butt can just be an itch or something more serious. Keep an eye on her and inspect the area to ensure there is nothing else going on.
Good luck to you and your dog! : )

Yes - it can be an indication of worms or impacted anal glands. Most American dog's diets arent balanced enough in terms of fiber. Impacted stool or the fecal mucus can build up inside these 2 sacs on either side of the anus. Any vet or even the occasional experienced groomer an "express" anal glands - its disgusting, trust me, I've done it, and it stinks so bad its almost indescribable - but your dog will feel much better. Get your dog's stool checked first right away - a simple stool sample check will point out what type of worms or parasites are present.

My dog does this sometimes. I asked the vet about it and he said that it could possible be an insect, or her feces is just irritating her anal area. She doesn't do it any more though. I would wipe her butt with a baby wipe for now and call the vet to set up an appointment to have her checked. She could have some sort of parasite. Good Luck!

My Dalmatian does that too. It means, gross as this sounds, she has to go to the vet or a groomer and get her anal glands squeezed because they're plugged up and irritating her. My dog has to get this done every 2-4 weeks (she's really old, poor girl).

Anal glands are full. Have the vet expel them and teach you how to do it so you don't need to pay the vet to do it. So dog groomers do it for a small fee. I'd have the vet do it the first time to make sure they are not impacted.

No - it is a sign of impacted anal glands. It needs a visit to the vets.
A vet can show you how to squeeze them to clear them - not very savoury though!!!
If the glands are not cleared the chances are they will get worse. This can be so painful that dogs have been known to chew through their hip to try and get to them!!
Vet is required!!
