he COULD do something miraculous because she had seen it all his life? I am asking this because some said he did not come into his powers untill late in life and I am thinking it was much much sooner that his Divinity manifested itself.

Scripture does NOT say his first miracle but, it says his first "Public Miracle"

Probably. He'd shown himself to her in those little ways that mother's notice but others do not.

My translation has it as the first of his signs, not the first of his *public* signs.

I really believe myself, that that was the first miracle that Jesus performed in His life.

I don't believe that he created fish miraculously in the water or birds out of clay, when He was a child.

This is because the purpose of His life in all those years in Nazareth was to sanctify the ordinary (for our sakes) were He was "merely the child of Joseph and Mary," although He was Incarnate God, of course.

And as far as Mary knowing that there was no more wine, there need not be any mystery in that - given the right conditions and certain things being said or done there, anyone could have come to a conclusion like that (we don't know the exact details of what happened) - but as far as Mary knowing that her Son could do a miracle, she always knew that He was God Incarnate, for it was revealed to her at the Annunciation, as related in the first chapter of Luke.

interesting question. certainly the blessed mother knew of the importance of her son,the angel gabrial told her plainly adn she accepted. this however does not mean he didn't perform any miraculous deeds prior to the wedding at cana, maybe he cured or prevented certain afflictions to his mother, father etc or maybe he didn't. i think it is somewhat irrelevant if he did as the first miracle in public teaches us a great deal about the power of the lord and we can see from this first public miracle the links to the eucharist in which nothing is impossible for and through the lord. god bless.

Actually, Mary had not seen it all His life. Scripture tells us that Jesus' first miracle was changing the water to wine at Cana.

While Mary and Joseph certainly knew He was God and had glimpses of His divinity early in His childhood, they had not witnessed a miracle of this kind before.

Jesus' miracles were to prove He was God. He didn't need to prove this to His parents. They already believed in Him.

Wow -- good question.

There is no record, however, of any miracles in his life UNTIL the wedding in Cana at the beginning of his ministry, when he was roughly 30 (there are a lot of folk tales about him as a child making clay birds that could fly, and so on.. but those are much later, dating to medieval times, along with the "Cherry Tree Carol" which has Him doing extraordinary things even before He was born yet).

Bear in mind, though, we're not talking about "powers" per se as though he were some kind of wizard. He is God, but he had to wait until the proper time to manifest this, as you say.

This is attested by the fact that everyone seems to have treated him just as a regular guy whom (and whose parents) they had known all his life. Until he began preaching, and teaching in the synagogues at age 30 (from what I've been told, that's kind of when Jewish men really begin to take part in the community and are considered mature enough to have something to say). There's a scene where he's teaching in Nazareth, and the crowd starts to say, "Isn't this Joseph the carpenter's son?" They couldn't understand where he had any teaching authority from because they had known him all along, and there hadn't been anything extraordinary about him that they were aware of. So that kind of indicates that he hadn't done anything unusual when he was younger, or word would have gotten around.

I believe it was part of Jesus' mission on earth, to be just like us, a "regular guy" for at least a part of His life. Then can He say that He knows what it is like to be human. He understands how we live and what it is to be like us. Then when he reaches maturity, about the age when it would be customary for him to marry, he begins His ministry.

Mary surely knew what He was, but the wedding at Cana is the first time He did anything out of the ordinary. Here is this poor family, who has run out of wine for their kid's wedding feast -- a disaster in that society, which would have shamed them before the whole community. Mary knows that Jesus CAN solve the problem, if He chooses... but will he? Is this the right moment? She tells him the host has no more wine, tells the servants to do whatever he commands them, and departs. It's His call. To do something, or not to do something? He does.

So the opening act of His ministry on earth is a simple act of kindness, to help this family celebrate the marriage of their child. Nothing dramatic, or flashy, and no one even saw it but His disciples, and the servants who KNEW what they had put in those jars (water) -- but you can bet those servants would have never forgotten it for the rest of their lives.

If you can, get your hands on Dorothy L. Sayers' book (a series of radio plays, actually) called The Man Born To Be King... this scene with the wedding in Cana is *priceless*.

I believe He was God from birth. He always had His 'powers', but as a man, He couldn't do them on His own. He had to get power from the Holy Spirit and He had to be obedient, as He was the Son (fifth commandment, honour thy parents). when He worked that mircale, he did it by the Holy Spirit. the Father gave the nod.

but yes, she knew. remember, God told her that she would give birth to a miraculous child, He was wiser at 12 than the 50 year old Rabbis, and of course, during childhood He exhibitted Godly characteristics in His relationship with the Father. why should she have doubted?

Of course she knew. Gabriel flat out told her who she would give birth to, and there are several instances in the Bible where she is said to "ponder these things in her heart". So I think she knew very well who her Son was and what He could do.

I think that Mary did know he could and would do something, and Jesus did.
