I live in Texas so I never have killed one. By looking at its size of a woodchuck a .22 Magnum would be good. A .222 or .223 my be a little bit to big of a caliber for that. I shoot Jack Rabbits and even Javelina here in TX with my .22 mag.

ITs a good gun for woodchucks if you get em in the head, squirrels and rabbit, and other littler varmints. Coons are a little harder to kill, but the .22 LR will and does do it. Big varmints, or long shots might need a .22 mag or a centerfire rifle. A .223 and 22-250 are both good coyote sized game guns, and are good for small varmints at long range.

Depends on which Varmit you are hunting. 22lr is a little small for a woodchuck. Also what makes a good varmit gun is a heavy barrel. Most light barrels heat up quite a bit and lose their accuracy after some shots.
Personally, I like the .223 for an all around varmit caliber. The 22lr is a good squirrel or rabbit gun, thats about it. For a woodchuck, the smallest I would use is the 22 WMR

Go with a .223. It's big enough for all the varmints, with the right load. The .17 is too light for coyotes past 100 yards. The .22 is a bunny gun.

I have shot many, many Woodchucks with a 22 L.R. all within 50 to 75 Yards from me. I am a head Hunter, and always hit them in the head, never in the body. That way your sure of a quick clean kill. It is extremely helpful if you have a very powerful scope mounted on your Rifle.. To reach out for longer distances I use a 22-250 caliber with a 20 Power Target scope attached to the Rifle which is a Remington Model 700 BDL with a Bull Barrel on it. That lets me get them in the head at 400 yards... I eat what I shoot. You don't spoil any meat when you hit them in the head.

That 22LR is just fine for short range shots but if your on a budget and maybe looking for something with more punch at a greater distance, try looking into a 223 bolt action, a 22-250 is a big step up. The 220 Swift is at the top, some of the new WSSM & WSM are also a fine choice though I have heard they mite not be around to long. Sales on them are wey down.

For all around varmit hunting,From woodchuck to coyote. I say a .223 wssm or .243 wssm. If you load you own you can put a 55grain bullet on the .243 wssm it is 4000 fps. Both are very accurate and will reach out there. You can also use the .243 wssm for deer with a 100 grain bullet.

Your .22 will make you a better hunter than if you used a more powerful rifle, but I prefer a .223. I have a Ruger model 77 .223 that's great. If you want a better long range rifle consider getting one, but for now the .22 will do the job within 100 yards.

Yes. .22Lr will work for any varmint. Occasionally a woodchuck may need a couple of shots.
