There isn't a magic cure that works for everyone but going to counseling, a support group and even medication can help someone dealing with depression.
I have serious depression and bi-polar and I didn't get help for it for a long time. After having a nervous brekadown and ending up in the hospital, I am now on medication and go to therapy once a week and it has made a HUGE difference in my life.

heh. I have a good feeling that most, if not all of the people answering this question have not experienced true depression, clinical or chronic. (edit*-Ok, ONE person, i too have bi-polar in my family, but its a bit different)
I don't have bipolar disorder.
To be honest, not everyone is the same. Sometimes nothing helps at a certain point or period. It also greatly varies on the degree, consistency of it, and the type (some have different symptoms and minor effects)
If you do indeed have this problem, then it would be good for you to find it yourself. Some like therapy, i don't. Some prefer drugs, i doubt the effectiveness and the side-effects are brutal. Some find small comforts in an activity, like listening to music or sleeping. I wouldn't suggest eating, simply because it causes unwanted weight gain for most people. Maybe try something to release endorphins for a small amount of something besides that gnawing pain. I was on the track team at the time, and it slightly helped.
Whatever you decided, try to make it either neutral or non-destructive. We all know the horror stories that come out of feeling a constant numbness or deep pit of despair.
Good luck to you.

Good diet, firstly, supplement with vitamins and minerals, include brainfoods like salmon for Omega 6 and 9. Magnesium is a must, as well as iron, perhaps have a tablespoon of molasses per day.
Cut out the icky stufff, the too much coffee or tea, switch to green tea or a herbal tea.
Get a good routine going to make sure you are getting enough sleep.
Also get excersize - join a gym, take up a activity, or if possible, take the dog or a neighbour's dog for a walk.
Pets are great therapy for depression.
Best of luck!

Counselling
Cognitive behavioural therapy
Anti depressants
Do speak to your doctor and get some advice; depression is horrible, but you can get through it with a bit of help.
Some people will tell you that, however bad you feel, you shouldn't take anti depressants. These people have never experienced real depression; ignore them if you are just feeling worse with every passing day.
Anti depressants can make a HUGE difference and turn your life around. So if you try more 'natural' methods and they don't work, speak to your doctor about medication.

There are a lot of ways to help with depression. Talk to people about your problems, and see if they have any advice. Try to be optimistic. Laugh at things. Even if they aren't funny. Smile. Analise situations and find the bright side of it. Or, of course, go to a psychiatrist. They will help.

I know but I can't tell you because all the big drug companies would put out a contract on my life. Well ok you twisted my arm I'll talk! Look into what you are eating, and get out more, even if you have to make yourself get up and go. Start conversations with people whether you know them or not! Toxins in your body are another cause, heavy metals mostly.

I've heard that medication can really help.... but that aside, other things include:
1. talking/connecting to people. keeping strong friendships.
2. being involved in an activity: sport, organization, cooking, gardening, whatever you like
3. breaking off ties/ fixing bad relationships
4. exercising! you'll feel better both physically and emotionally

the most important thing is sport, do anything just keep moving.
also keep in touch with people, never stay alone if its possible.
music and singing out loud can help too.
