Well, you're gonna have as many different replies equal to as many answer. It depends on the person. If you know what the woman, that you're interested in, likes/dislikes that'll help right there. (Or if she has a friend that you could ask what she likes, that may help also. But if you do, make sure it's one that you both mutually talk to-so as to avoid jealousy.)
I, myself, I'm a card person. It doesn't have to be hallmark, but if it's a card that says something about how the other person feels about you, you get EXTRA brownie pts from me! ;) Other than that, I like both flowers (carnations-pink. No roses, that's the standard kind of "safe" gift) or candy.
You could also try either a poem (if you're creative in that way) or just something to know you're thinking of her.
P.S. At Hallmark, they have those musical cards, though Walmart has them too now, through American Greetings. Those are cool too. ;) Good luck!

Well, chocolates are a nice thought BUT not sentimental or anything
Flowers, are sentimental and a good way to make your girl brighten up and to let her know you were thinking about her
Something Else, when my b/f one night was dropping me off at my house we were in his truck and he slipt me a velvet box, and inside was a necklace. It wasn't any special occasion or anything it was a just because he loved me, and something like that she can wear and is always thinking about you when she puts it on. It's a more than sentimental gift, more a "I cherish you".
every type of gift has a meaning to her,and it means you cared enough and was thinking about her. Either way you're going to make her smile with a surprise gift.

Well since I have sinus issues never flowers....
Chocolates make a girl fat in time....but you cover strawberries with it....
I am a simple girl so anything that comes in the form of a unicorn or a white tiger.....
I like stuff animals and things I can keep for a long time
And everytime I look at it I know where and who it came from for many years....even if that person isn't that special to me anymore

Flowers would die...
I don't like chocolates...
...and I feel that a 'for no real reason surprise gift' should be a 'surprise' and should be spontaneus and original.
I would prefer a mixed CD of my favorite songs.
A really nice bracelet (doesn't have to diamond or silver or anything).
A trip somewhere (not like France, just somewhere cool).

Anything that is truly from the heart. If your getting flowers do a little research and find out her favorite flower and her favorite color. Chocolates...not so much. A letter that really lets her know how you feel is always appreciated. The rose petal idea is always a hit too.

Flowers and Chocolate are too impersonal.

A book is always nice if she enjoys to read.
Or you can spice it up and do something creative like create a cd with tunes you made.
