The kneecap (the patella) is a triangular bone at the front of the knee. Several tendons and ligaments connect to the kneecap, including ones attached to the upper leg (femur) and lower leg (tibia) bones.
Though the kneecap is not needed for walking or bending your leg, it makes your muscles more efficient and absorbs much of the stress between the upper and lower portions of the leg. Climbing stairs and squatting can put up to seven times your normal body weight on the kneecap and the joint behind it.
The kneecap can fracture in many ways: partially or completely or into only a few or into many pieces. Sometimes when the kneecap is fractured, the ligaments or tendons attached to it can be sprained or torn.
Symptoms of a Kneecap Fracture
Symptoms may include:
Severe pain in and around the kneecap
Swelling
Pain when moving the knee in both directions
Difficulty extending the leg or doing a straight-leg raise
A deformed appearance of the knee due to the fractured pieces
Tenderness when pressing on the kneecap

I have never broken a kneecap. However, you can break it in a couple ways like a sudden heavy blow to directly to the patella (kneecap), or just immense pressure on it (crush wound). You would need an XRay to confirm the break but typically there is an immense amount of swelling and severe pain. I believe there is pins involved in the healing of a broken kneecap considering it would be hard to cast.

You might have broken it; maybe you should go get it checked out at the doctors?
But I think you would be able to tell if you broke your kneecap, you would be in a hell-like pain and not be able to walk if you did break it, which is possible because any bone in your body can break.

The kneecap can be broken like any other bone. Get someone to bring you to a Doctor's office. Since today is Sunday and tomorrow is a holiday you may have to go to the ER for X-rays.

Three weeks ago my husband's metal nail gun handle backed into my knee cap, which hurt quite sharply for a couple minutes then it eased up substantially. It doesn't hurt or effect walking, or any activity for than matter. However, when I kneel on it it stings a lot and I can not put weight on it. And if I try to recreate the sting by pushing that spot with my fingers it does not hurt, only when I kneel does it hurt. If there is a chance I chipped the bone should I have looked at or will it heal okay with no intervention.

Yes you can break a knee cap, but it is not likely that lifting weights broke it. There are ligaments under your knee cap that can be torn easily lifting weights, see a doctor/specialist about it, in the mean time stay off it, apply cold packs. The down side is that it might hurt the rest of your life, even if you have it repaired!

YOU BET!
Many people have snapped their kneecap in two.
You would know if you broke it, you probly wudnt be able to walk, only in rare cases of broken knee caps can you walk. Even if you dont think its broken see a doctor beecause you probly injured it in some way.

yes you can but it involved blunt force to the knee cap....sounds like though you pulled some tendons as that is usually what happens from weight lifting.
Go to the er...it is better to be safe than sorry...as a friend of mine says..."Be careful with your knees you will miss them one day"
