I have had several gerbils starting from age 9. They aren't difficult to care for as long as you take care of their basic needs. Gerbils requre a clean cage as well as fresh food and water.
Changing the cage about once a week should be sufficient. Just leave a small amount of the old bedding in for familiarity.
Also, remember to keep the cage away from drafts and direct sunlight :)
Fresh food and water should be given on a daily basis. If you have a water bottle instead of a water dish then that can be changed weekly.
A wheel or ball would be great to keep them in shape since these are active creatures. Do note that these are mostly nocturnal (prefer to be awake at night) animals so they might seem to sleep a lot.

Gerbils are pretty easy. Kind of like mice or hapmsters. They are desert critters so the need less water and don't pee or stink as much as other reodents. They do chew a lot and like seeds a bit more than the others do.
They actually do better in something like a large glass aquarium tank (dry) than a cage because they wont be able to chew on the wires like they do in cages.

I'm amazed that no one mentioned -- you need TWO gerbils, at least. Gerbils NEED the company of other gerbils and it is essential that you get them both at the same time, from the same cage. You cannot introduce adult gerbils -- they will fight to the death.
You need to get two FEMALES or two MALES -- NOT one of each!
They are fun and the more you play with them the tamer they will be. Clean the cage as often as needed -- which might be MORE than once a week. And of course you must give them fresh food and water every day.
Do a little bit more research so when you get them you will be able to ENJOY them!

No gerbils are not hard to take care of.Except when you
have to clean its cage.It really stinks.They can be very fun to watch running in its wheel.Sometimes they can be funny
too.I have a gerbil too.His name is Spice,he can be like that
sometimes,but he's not hard to take care of.

no not at all! they are sooo playful and I recomend them. they arent shy at all as long as you interact with them. They love to try new things and they dont even really need a cage( I was VERY caferul and let mine run around the house) GOOD LUCK!

no, i don't think so. i've never had one, but i've had guinea pigs and my friend has had gerbils and guinea pigs. she said it's not much different from taking care of guinea pigs, which is pretty easy. you just have to clean their cage like once a week and give them water and food when they need it.

2. no, they are very low maintenance, and are actually a lot less work then hamsters, because you don't need to clean their cage as often.
please do as much research as possible before purchasing gerbils though.
