You shouldn't be using anything besides regular in a Taurus. It's not a high performance car and was not built to run on premium.

There is one thing that no one has said yet..

If you have a 1996 Taurus SHO, Which is the High Performance version with 10:1 compression ratio. I would recommend not doing it at all. You will start pinging under load. Which in turn can cause damage to your valves. Will it happen instantly no. will your engine blow up in month? NO I would listen for the Knocking or Pinging.. If it does it lightly during regular acceleration I would Not use it... Unleaded Plus or premium is only 10 to 20 Cents higher or $3 more for a full tank I would rather pay an extra $3 for smooth running car. What does an engine rebuild cost for a Taurus SHO? OUCH that is all I will say.

IF you have Any other Taurus Model... You should be able to run regular unleaded. But you still should listen for ping. If you hear your car pinging I would change brands brands or just randomly mix Octanes..

Ford recommends 87 octane (regular in the vehicle) unless it was a high performance edition (mainly the 3.4 v8 SHO model).

The car will actually run it's best if allowed to burn the fuel correctly... The higher octane resists burning longer.. mainly if the engine isn't knocking, Ford and others will recommend 87 octane.. only if it knocks does it recommend higher (unless it's a high output engine that requires 91 or more)

I got a 96 also and it doesn't matter. you will only notice alittle more power with the higher octane gas. Nothing bad will happen. I switch back and forth depending on gas prices...but for now I'll probably just stick with regular. You should too.

The Taurus (except some SHOs) will run fine on regular grade unleaded. Plus grade is unnecessary and a waste of money.

As long it is unleaded, there would be no problem. As a matter of fact, downgrading from plus to regular will save you a ton of money.

I have the same car! Well 97 taurus... and what I do is every other trip to the gas station, I will switch between regular and plus. That is what my mechanic told me to do to save money, so go for it!

Your owner's manual should tell you what's the minimum octane you need. You should have no problems, if you do you'll probably hear knocking in your engine especially going uphills, then you'll know you really need premium.
