The reason is because of auxiliary devices that wouldn't look right with out the presents of the TV, such as a DVD player, receiver, tivo, etc. Also it would mean the would have to spend extra to try to camouflage the wiring with the rest of the equipment. And besides, old style ones don't have that picture perfect quality.

Because they have larger screens, better picture, look smarter etc. Mine is on a stand but is pushed upto a wall so saves a lot of space. I have 5 things plugged into it and the wall systems/trunking doesnt look that good I think with a dvd player, xbox360, skybox, wii etc etc jammed in. I have a smoked glass door covering all this stuff on the stand.

You may find this hard to believe, but it isn't actually compulsory to fix an LCD or plasma TV to the wall.
This is why the manufacturers make something called 'stands'. Some are pedestal stands, to put the TV on a shelf or rack. Others are floor stands, to allow an A/V amp to be stored under the TV.
Amazing, isn't it...?

some people dont like to wall mount them because they still need to be connected to mains, dvd player, sky box etc and that means unsiglhty wires danglng down the wall.
